Hong Kong legislator Perry Yiu Pak‑leung (LegCo Member, Tourism Sector) urged the government to accelerate the development of high‑quality ecotourism products and expand advance booking systems, following a survey of 651 residents indicating strong natural tourism potential but insufficient quality offerings. Most respondents support professional guided tours, conservation‑focused education, and restricted access through certified tour operators.
Yiu called for a cross‑departmental task force and a review of the pilot booking scheme at High Island East Dam before expanding to other sites under the “Four Peaks” ecotourism initiative, which includes The Peak, Lantau Peak, Tai Mo Shan, and Sai Kung Hoi.
Industry leaders — Tommy Tam Kwong‑shun, Chairman of the Travel Industry Council, and Derek Tse Yue‑tak, General Manager of Eco Travel — highlighted transport constraints, complex permit procedures, and unlicensed cross‑border tours as key obstacles to developing premium ecotourism products.
