Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association Promoting optimist sailing amongst young sailors in Hong Kong.

The objectives of the HKODA are very clear in that it wants to promote optimist sailing amongst young sailors in Hong Kong. The participation of sailors from HKSSA and from overseas at this year’s National shows that HKODA has been successful in widening the appeal of Optimist sailing in Hong Kong and promoting it abroad. There are, however, still many youngsters in Hong Kong that have not yet bee

n introduced to sailing. HKODA, with the help of HKSF and the Hong Kong schools & clubs, will try to reach them and successfully continue the promotion of Optimist Sailing in Hong Kong.

Congrats to all the sailors who participated in the TMT (Tai Mei Tuk) Optimist Ranking Regatta on May 2-3, 2026, the final HKG ranking regatta before the sailors break for the summer. A special thanks to the Race Committee (lead by Inge Strompf-Jensen), the organizers, and the volunteers who helped run a smooth and seemless event. 6 races were completed in Main & Intermediate fleet and 8 races were done in Green fleet under varying weather conditions. After the AP on Saturday, the breeze picked up but remained light compared to Sunday where there were some patchy periods of strong wind and rain brought by the storm.

The Main fleet competition was close between the top 4 sailors -all RHKYC, lead by Coach Alfie, but Xinran Liu managed to clinch 1st. Other notable prizes went to Alex Petton (RHKYC) for 1st Intermediate, followed by Mathhias Leung (2nd) and Alessi Chunhei (3rd) - both HHYC. For Green fleet, Austin Miao (HHYC) was 1st, followed by Deng Boyuan (China), and Wong Chunhei (HKSS). It was also great to see some upcoming sailors from China and Sailability compete. Mary Arvhela Cabusay of Sailability placed 4th in intermediate.

Results below:

Main fleet:
πŸ₯‡ Xinran Liu, RHKYC, HKG 187
πŸ₯ˆ Tara Maliah, RHKYC, HKG 190

Many thanks to TC Li, for helping to capture memories for all the sailors and participants of the event.

The invited sailors based on the World/Euro rankings will have the opportunity to join the clinic on March 20-23rd at H**e Haven Yacht Club in Sai Kung with coach Harry Bethwaite!

We’re excited to bring together young sailors for an Optimist Camp designed to sharpen racing fundamentals, build confidence on the water, and support the growth of young sailors in HK. Organized by HKSF, co-organized by HKODA, hosted by HHYC, and subvented by LCSD, this clinic is a great opportunity for young sailors to learn, train, and challenge themselves alongside peers from across Hong Kong.

Train hard, sail fast, and have fun - most importantly, enjoy the journey!
