👃🏻 Diaphragmatic Breathing (Belly Breathing)

Rhythm:
- Inhale through the nose for 4 counts
- Exhale through the mouth for 6 counts

Awareness:
- Feel the expansion of the rib cage and belly when breathing in, treat it as a “hello” from your diaphragm saying that it’s working
- As the practice deepen, you can also feel the back rising and falling

Variation:
- Sphinx Pose will gently open the chest and stretch the abdomen, which will help us breathe better
- Don’t shrug your shoulders, relax the neck
- If you feel strained on the lower back, please practice laying down on the floor

Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.- Yoga Sutras 1.2

The practice is never about physical movement, but through a state of stillness, our oscillating mind will finally come to rest.

A still mind will connect us to our peaceful self.

(廣東話👇🏼 )Vinyasa is hard because it’s too fast? Hatha is hard because teacher said 5 breaths to you seems like 12? Yin is boring because there’s no joy when the stretch is intense? They said focus on the breath will calm the monkey mind but never works? Literally how to relax in a yoga class? Why yoga?! Yoga why?!

I may (or may not) have the answers for you. 🙃

We tend to like things that we are good at, and say no to things we can’t do well. That’s normal. You don’t have to like everything. Here I’m only suggesting that if you understand the breathing principles, you will do better in a yoga class. And maybe, you will start to enjoy yoga! 🤓 (Obviously I’m hosting a workshop, details below 👇🏼)

(Cantonese in comments section) 🕉️ Think about how we were born with the ability to breathe naturally but were never taught how to breathe properly - and breathing is actually the string of life - taking it for granted don’t seem wise.

Despite the majority of humans don’t really care, there have been groups of pioneers experimenting, documenting, preaching and studying on how the breath affects us physically and mentally, from spiritual traditions dating back over 3,000 years. Maybe it’s worth the time to learn about their findings?

Relax, we’re not going to get woo-woo (or we might) just yet. Let’s start with facts and basics that you can actually apply in daily life.

▶️ In this 3-hour workshop you will learn:

1. ancient science vs modern science of breathing
2. how does the breath affect our health
3. difference between breathing in yoga class vs in general
4. what is “good breathing”?
5. is mouthbreathing wrong?
6. find out your breathing pattern
7. explore different breathing techniques (yogic & scientific)

▶️ You will walk away with:

1. a toolkit that is essential for most life situations
2. better knowledge on this thing that determines your wellbeing
3. hopefully doing better in yoga, and in the office too 🤓

Do you have a “all or nothing” personality? I do. Also trying not to every day.

I used to think either I do a full set of intense pranayama practice, chant at least 108 times, or I better not do it.

Truth is, for majority of us, we can do difficult things and give up easily; or we can do easy things and stick to it.

Admitting I don’t have what it takes to be “special” is another humbling realization.

If you are like me, and you want to build a sustainable breathing practice, my suggestions are:

1. Often is good enough. Commitment sounds terrifying. (Trust me I know.) So don’t tell yourself you need to do everyday, but since you know it’s the right thing to do, you’ll probably be willing to do it as often as you can.

2 Don’t complicate the breath. Do what you know and good at. Simple breathing is the best kind of practice. (Fancy techniques you can do it with your teachers.)

3. Be nice to yourself. We don’t live in the Himalayas. No days are the same. Hormones, stress levels, foods, life events all at play. (E.g. no breath of fire 🔥 during periods.)

4. Remember how it feels afterwards. I count on those feelings to encourage myself when I get lazy. (I am still lazy.)

I think these things apply to anything in life. It is not setting the bar low to make myself feel good, it is setting myself up for greater success - mindset shifts, behavior changes.

If you want to start building a sustainable breathing practice, you should join our upcoming workshop -

A student once told me her chiropractor said she “didn’t know how to breathe”, she asked me for advice. Here’s my take on this:

First of all she of course knows how to breathe 😅, she’s born with it, but she may lack breath awareness and a little bit of skills.

One of the repetitive things you’ve heard in a yoga class is probably “deep breath in to your belly”, anatomically it is impossible because your lungs are not in your belly, and I often find students having a “wrong” interpretation on deep breaths.

If we take a big gulp of air and the breath finishes in 1 second, does it make it deep? Obviously the answer is no. A better idea is to focus on length, not depth. Let’s do 2 simple things about this.

1. Start With Asana Practice
Most of us work in front of the computer and the byproduct is tight shoulders and chest. These muscles are linked to our breathing, and even the diaphragm is a muscle. Asana practice helps us remove muscle tensions, once the body is relaxed, it is easier to breathe well.

2. Focus on exhaling

Short breaths imply nervousness. Exhalation lowers blood pressure and heart rate, as a result calm down the nervous system. By exhaling longer, we can trick the brain to relax. We don’t want to force ourselves to breathe more, slow breathing automatically gives more depth.

It takes some practice to build breath awareness, and if you are interested in learning more about this essential skill, you should sign up for our upcoming workshop “How to breathe well”. I will share more in the coming posts.
