Background
In the Wing Chun world, there exists a common opinion that what we call “Ip Man” Wing Chun and “Gulao” Wing Chun are two distinctive boxing systems. If we explore this in depth more, both methods are the essence of Dr Leung Jan’s Wing Chun system. They are two sides of the same coin. In other words, the Wing Chun system taught by Dr Leung Jan (1825-1894) in Foshan and Heshan can be said to be the complete integration of the two “styles”.
I have been most fortunate to train for 20 years with Sifu Chow Tze Chuen, a disciple of Ip Man in the 1950s. I also learnt the Gulao style through private lessons from Sifu Fung Keung for over ten years. He was the son of Master Fung Chun, who learnt from Wong Wah Sam, a student of Dr Leung Jan in Heshan.
Course Outline & Objective
The objective of this course is to dispel the misconceptions that “Ip Man” Wing Chun and “Gulao” Wing Chun are two distinctive styles by analyzing:
· the relationship between frontal and angled stances through boxing principles (拳訣);
· the relationship between frontal and angled stances through hand techniques;
· the shoulder serves as the meridian in the angled stance (偏身以膊為子午);
· the key techniques for close-range striking and entering.
This course will cover Gulao’s twelve separate techniques, their partner exercises and their association with the three empty-hand forms and one wooden dummy form represented by Ip Man.
