【 Announcement 】 Hong Kong, China Mountaineering and Climbing Union’s Statement of Condolence on the Avalanche Incident at Broad Peak, Pakistan
Hong Kong, China Mountaineering and Climbing Union (HKCMCU) has received notification from the Union of Asian Alpine Associations (UAAA) regarding a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, Pakistan, which resulted in the loss of multiple elite climbers, including the renowned expedition leader Mr. Nirmal Purja. All members of the Union are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.
Mr. Nirmal Purja was a legendary figure in the global climbing community and was honored as the recipient of the UAAA's "Sherpa of the Year Award" in 2022. With his extraordinary passion and perseverance for the 14 Himalayan peaks, he inspired countless young people and mountaineering enthusiasts across Nepal and worldwide to pursue their dreams. His passing represents an immeasurable loss to international mountaineering and mountain sports.
On behalf of the Hong Kong mountaineering and climbing community, the Union expresses:
1. Our profound condolences to the families and loved ones of all
deceased climbers, as well as to the global climbing community.
2. Our deepest sympathy to the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and Nepal's mountaineering community.
3. Our heartfelt gratitude to the Alpine Club of Pakistan for their full cooperation and assistance in the rescue and recovery efforts following the accident.
May the departed rest in peace, and may the mountains forever remember their courage and spirit.
