OSU!

BUDO and the Spirit of OSU
In Yoshinkan Aikido and some schools of Karate, we say “Osu!”
It means TO PRESERVE — to try our best and NEVER GIVE UP. Many senior Aikido-ka who trained for several years later shared that the greatest gift from their time at the Shudokan dojo was learning this spirit of never quitting.
We learn this by stepping out of our comfort zone. Only when we push our limits and face pressure can we truly discover what we are capable of. It is this intensity that builds character and reveals it.
Additionally, “Osu” also carries the deeper meaning of “PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH ME”. In class, we bow to our Sensei and say “Osu.” We also bow to our training partners with the same intention.
Budo cannot exist without patience — it is a lifelong journey.
