A reflection on youth sports posts I see in my feed — and what they teach our children.
This week I saw a club celebrating U8, U10, U11 and U12 teams winning trophies at an overseas tournament. The post was full of pride, and the coaches clearly love their kids. I don't question the heart behind it.
But I want to name something quietly: the way we celebrate children's sport teaches them what matters.
When a post leads with "Cup Champions ✅ U8 ✅ U10 ✅ U11" — we teach 7-year-olds that winning is the point.
When we say "focused team, just enough substitutions" — we teach the children who weren't selected that they weren't good enough.
When we frame "despite exams, our players showed up with heart" — we teach parents that disrupting school is dedication.
None of this is malicious. It's the system we've inherited. But Norway and Japan show us a different way: celebrate effort. Rotate squads so everyone travels. Frame tournaments as experiences, not results. Keep the joy in the game — especially at U8.
The pride in these posts is genuine. I'd just love to see it organised around growth, not trophies. Because the children who don't win deserve to feel proud too. And they're the ones we're most at risk of losing.
