A recent custom medal project for the Elkhart Lake Tri & Du.

The client supplied the original race logo, and we converted it into a production-ready medal design while keeping the trees, lake, lettering and overall shape recognizable.

The finished medals were made from zinc alloy with antique copper plating, multi-level relief and imitation enamel colors. Some of the tree and lake sections were quite narrow, so we had to pay extra attention to the metal borders during mold development and color filling.

Thickness: 3 mm

Ribbon: custom sublimation ribbon

After final QC, the order was packed and shipped by UPS to Michigan, USA.

For this project, we produced 650 Wicked Run medals featuring a custom irregular shape, 3D metal details and colorful enamel finishes.

The small details are what make a custom medal feel right in the hand.

For this running championship medal, we used a 3 mm zinc alloy base, bright nickel plating and soft enamel coloring.

The raised silver metal lines help separate the burgundy, yellow and white areas, while the cut-out sections give the medal more depth.

A matching full-color FINISHER ribbon completed the piece.

300 medals were produced, inspected and shipped as one batch.

How a Colorful Race Logo Becomes a Metal Medal
Before production starts, we have to separate the artwork into raised metal areas, recessed colors, outlines and plating sections.

That was especially important for this Chocolate Run design because it included detailed lettering, cupcake graphics, chocolate elements and multiple race distances.

After the mold was made, the medals went through polishing, bright silver or gold plating, color filling, ribbon assembly and final inspection.

This order reached 1,200 pieces in total.

For us, the goal is simple: keep the personality of the original artwork, but make sure the finished product works as a real metal race medal.

Planning Medals for a Bodybuilding or Fitness Competition?
A championship medal should feel different from a standard participation medal.

For this project, the client chose an oversized format of around 170mm, with a custom openwork structure, raised 3D details and antique gold, silver and bronze finishes.

The medal was developed directly from their federation logo rather than placing the logo onto a standard round blank.

That gave the finished award a much stronger identity.

What Makes a Good 3D Medal? The Mold Comes First.

This project is a good example of why a complicated medal can’t simply be copied from a flat logo.

The dragon, wings, castle and lettering all needed different relief heights.

Before casting the first piece, we checked the design from both the front and the side. After die casting, the raw medal was polished carefully so the smaller details stayed sharp.

Only then did we move into antique gold plating, soft enamel and final assembly.

The finished medal weighed 277.4g with the ribbon.

This is the part of custom medal manufacturing customers usually don’t see — but it makes a big difference in the final result.

Here’s a recent oversized medal project we completed for Manchester’s Strongest in the UK.

The customer provided their event logo, and our production team converted it into a 150mm zinc alloy medal with raised relief, red and black enamel, and gold, silver and bronze finishes.

Before production, we prepared the medal artwork and 3D relief model for approval. Once confirmed, the medals moved through mold production, die casting, trimming, polishing, plating, enamel filling, ribbon assembly and QC.

A few weeks later, the customer confirmed delivery:

“They are fantastic as always.”

That’s the kind of feedback we like to see at the end of a real production project.
