Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally 2025

Alive takes both Line Honours and the IRC Overall win!

Australian entry, Phillip Turner and Duncan Hine's Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive crossed the finish line in Nha Trang on Friday at 17:11:01 HKT, claiming Line Honours in the 2025 Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally. Their elapsed time was 2 days, 5 hours, 51 minutes, and 01 seconds, marking another impressive performance following their 2017 victory, where they finished in 2 days, 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 56 seconds.

On her corrected time of 3 days 12 hours 55 minutes 19 seconds, none of other IRC boats competing can beat her time in this 673nm rally.

The last boat to complete the Rally was Tong Ran, Jiaqi Wu’s Dufour 500. Tong Ran crossed the finish line in Nha Trang on Sunday at 01:12:44 HKT, with a corrected time of 3days 17 hours, 34 minutes 18 seconds, securing IRC Overall 2nd place.

IRC Overall 3rd place goes to another Australian entry, Cookson 50 Hollywood Samurai, helmed by Ray Roberts, with a corrected time of 3 days, 17 hours, 56 minutes, and 23 seconds.

Congratulations to all winners and their crew for strong showing in the 673 nm downwind challenge from Hong Kong to Nha Trang.

2025 香港至越南拉力賽
Alive 勇奪衝線冠軍及 IRC全場總冠軍！

澳洲船隻Phillip Turner 與 Duncan Hine的Reichel/Pugh 66 型Alive號，早前於星期五下午 17:11:01（香港時間）抵達芽莊終點，榮獲本屆香港至越南拉力賽衝線冠軍，總航行時間為 2天5小時51分鐘01秒，再次展現卓越實力。修正時間為 3天12小時55分鐘19秒，由於其他 IRC 組別的參賽船未能超越 Alive 的成績，因此Alive號榮獲全場總冠軍。

最後一隻抵達芽莊的船隻是來自中國大陸、吳家麒的Dufour 500型彤然號，他們於星期日凌晨1: 12:44 （香港時間）完成，憑修正時間為 3天17小時34分鐘18秒奪得IRC 全場總亞軍。

IRC 全場總季軍則由另一艘澳洲參賽船隻、 Ray Roberts 掌舵的Cookson 50型 Hollywood Samurai號，以修正時間 3天17小時56分鐘23秒獲得第三名。

Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally
Final Finisher – Tong Ran

The last boat to complete the 2025 Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally was Tong Ran, Jiaqi Wu’s Dufour 500. Tong Ran crossed the finish line in Nha Trang on Sunday at 01:12:44 Hong Kong Time.

Congratulations to Jiaqi Wu and the crew of Tong Ran for a strong finish and a successful offshore campaign in their first Vietnam Rally!

Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally

After the tough rally from Hong Kong to Nha Trang, Neo One navigator Ben Harding mentioned they had recorded a top speed of 18.3kts. "First night, of course, is always out of Hong Kong. Some park ups in the middle, some storms, some sun. So a bit of everything. Very exciting. We had a bit of everything. It was really fun."

Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally

Reflecting on their 673nm journey, the crew of Fenice shared:

“The race was challenging. We had a solid start but soon fell behind the faster boats, which kicked off a close battle with Neo One. The most difficult part was that we had trouble with some headsails early on due to heavy weather and some failure in the halyard. We also lost one sail overboard. Initially, we were moving fast, but then hit a patch of light wind, which was tough for our boat—Fenice is heavy and really needs strong breeze to perform. Fortunately, conditions improved toward the end with a stronger wind that helped us regain momentum.”

In the final 30nm approaching Nha Trang, Fenice and Neo One were locked in a tactical duel:

“They were gybing, and we had to respond, but we were behind and needed to make up time. So we chose to goose wing and sail straight on. It wasn’t easy—the waves started rolling the boat quite a bit—but we managed it well. It was a good run to the finish.”

Zesst has just completed the Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally, which lasted 4 days, 2 hours, and 36 minutes. They shared their experience with us, saying, "It was amazing. The start was decent, with reasonable wind, and once we turned downwind, things got exciting. We hit a top speed of 23.8kts over ground, which was a record for us during the race. Unfortunately, we blew a few sails on the first night, which set us back. To make things more challenging, we discovered a 10m long rope, about 10cm thick, wrapped around the keel. It must have been dragging for nearly 200 miles before we managed to recover it in a light wind zone. Thankfully, despite the setback, there was no damage to the engine."

Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally
Finished – Zesst!

They’ve done it! Zesst, skippered by Henning Mueller, crossed the finish line in Nha Trang on Saturday at 13:46:31 HKT, after starting 24 hours ahead of the main fleet. A huge congratulations to Henning Mueller and his team for a strong and determined performance in the Hong Kong to Vietnam Rally!
