Happy Pride Month from all of us at Awakened Spirit Yoga 🌈

This June, and every month, we honour the beauty, strength, and diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We know that pride is about more than celebration; it’s about visibility, safety, self-expression, and the right to exist fully and freely in your body and your truth.

In our space, yoga is not about fitting into a mold, it’s about coming home to yourself. We believe that every body is worthy, every identity is valid, and every person deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported on their mat. That’s part of why all our trainings at ASY are designed with inclusivity at the heart of them.

Pride reminds us that authenticity is a practice. It asks us to show up as we are, to breathe into who we’re becoming, and to hold space for one another with compassion and respect.

Whether you’re exploring your identity, celebrating it loudly, or simply seeking a place to belong, you are welcome here at ASY.

With love,
The Awakened Spirit Yoga Team

Life, like yoga, holds both the sunshine and the rain. ☀️🌧️

There are moments in your practice and in life where everything feels open and light. And then there are moments that ask us to sit with discomfort, to soften into challenge, and to trust the process even when it’s hard.

This beautiful poem from Erin Hanson reminds us… we don’t grow from ease alone. It’s the balance of both, the sunshine and the rain, that shapes us into more compassionate teachers.

Is there a poem that you often refer back to? Let us know in the comments.

“Yoga’s future is rooted in connection: to self, to community, and to a deeper purpose that extends far beyond the mat.” - Julia Forest, ASY Founder

This is something we come back to again and again in our courses at Awakened Spirit Yoga. It isn’t just what happens during a class, it’s the way we listen inward, the way we hold space for others, and the way we carry that awareness into our everyday lives.

We believe our role as teachers is to foster real connection, beyond alignment cues and sequences (which are of course important too!). To create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.

Because the future of yoga isn’t about doing more, it’s about feeling more, connecting more, and remembering why we began this incredible journey in the first place.

If you’ve been thinking about continuing your teaching path, we’d love to connect. Visit our website to find a course that fits with your goals.

Did you know yoga can support your immune system through the thymus gland? 🧘‍♀️

In our blog we explore the fascinating connection between yoga, immunity, and the thymus gland, a small but powerful gland located near the heart that plays a key role in developing the body’s immune defenses.

Often called the heart of the immune system, the thymus helps produce T-lymphocytes, the cells that protect us from infection. As we age, this gland naturally shrinks, but yoga philosophy teaches that mindful movement, breathwork, and heart-centered awareness can help keep this vital area active and supported.

In the blog, we explore how chest-opening yoga poses, breath practices, and meditation on the Anahata (heart) chakra may help stimulate the thymus and promote overall vitality. You’ll also learn about supportive practices like Camel Pose, Fish Pose, Plow Pose, and Bhastrika Pranayama, all designed to expand the chest, improve posture, and encourage healthy energy flow around the heart center. At ASY, we often speak about compassion and kindness as practices we cultivate both on and off the mat. In her poem Kindness, Naomi Shihab Nye reminds us that our deepest empathy often grows from our own experiences of vulnerability, loss, and change.

“Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.”

How can we incorporate the practice of staying present with difficulty rather than rushing past it? What do we need to soften to move through challenge, whether in life, in birth, or even in a difficult pose? This season we’re leaning into the tenderness that connects us all. We hope you are too.

Why pelvic stability is so important 🍃🍃

After birth, many parents are surprised by how much their posture changes. Nearly 80% of people experience back pain during or after pregnancy, and it makes sense when you consider everything the body has been through. The glutes often weaken, hip flexors tighten, and the pelvic floor and core muscles need time to regain strength. At the same time, your uterus is still shrinking, organs are shifting back into place, your body may still be bleeding for several weeks, and your breasts may feel heavier and more sensitive. Add in frequent feeding, lifting, and carrying your baby, and it’s easy for the body to fall into patterns that strain the back and neck.

This is where gentle postpartum yoga and mindful movement can be so supportive. Many new parents find themselves hunching forward to breastfeed, carrying babies on one hip, or walking with slumped shoulders and a forward head, all common parts of what’s often called postpartum posture.

Simple yoga-based stretches and strengthening exercises can help reconnect with the core and pelvic floor, open the chest and shoulders, and bring the body back into better alignment over time. At Awakened Spirit Yoga we always remind teachers that healing takes time, small, supportive movements and body awareness can make a big difference during the postpartum months.

World Doula Week is a moment to honour the quiet, powerful work of holding space.

As yoga teachers, we practice presence, breath, and trust in the body’s wisdom. In birthwork, doulas do something very similar, We both invite people to turn inward, to listen deeply, and to move through transformation with support rather than force.

Through our sister organization Doula School, we have been able to experience the natural symmetry between doula care and pre- and postnatal yoga: meeting people where they are, adapting to the moment, and creating safety through calm, consistent presence.

This week, we celebrate doulas and yoga practitioners who support families through some of life’s most profound transitions, reminding us that care, breath, and embodied support change everything.

If you’ve ever considered training as a doula, visit DoulaSchool.com to learn more about the available programs.
