Is storytelling your "secret weapon" yet? ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธโœจ

In the rush to finish the curriculum, we sometimes forget that our students are more than just "language learners." They are humans with imaginations, fears, and stories to tell.

I use storytelling games in my classroom because they do more than just practise the past tense: they build connection, confidence, and creativity. When we give students the space to create, we aren't just teaching English. We are giving them a voice. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโค๏ธ

Do you use storytelling as a "warm-up" or a "main event" in your lessons? Iโ€™d love to hear how you weave it in! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Iโ€™m truly honoured to share that my article, โ€œStories That Travel: How Voices from Gaza Transform My Classroom,โ€ has been published in Melta News and is now also available on my website blog.

This piece comes straight from the heart. It reflects on how stories told by children in Gaza through the "Tell a Child in Gazaโ€™s Tale" initiative have deeply shaped my work with students in Greece, helping us explore language through drama, storytelling, empathy, and human connection.

I would love for my friends, colleagues, and fellow educators to read it and help amplify these young storytellersโ€™ voices.

A heartfelt thank-you to Melta News for giving space to stories and educational work that truly matter, and especially to Randy Perry for his thoughtful editing and support throughout the process.

Deep gratitude also goes to David Heathfield and Haneen Khaled Jadallah, whose work through "Tell a Child in Gazaโ€™s Tale" continues to build bridges between children and classrooms across the world through the transformative power of storytelling.

Stories travel. Voices matter. And childrenโ€™s stories deserve to be heard, remembered, and shared.

Can your students catch you in a lie? ๐Ÿคฅ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

True or Untrue is one of my favourite activities for Intermediate and Advanced learners. It turns a standard "speaking practice" into a high-stakes detective game.

When students have to defend a story, true or made up, they start using more complex descriptions and authentic reactions without even realizing it.

Tell me: If you played this, would you tell a true story or a total lie? I think Iโ€™m a pretty good liar but my students always catch me! ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ‘‡

"And then... he ate the goldfish." ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ

Sometimes students just need a little "spark" to get their creative engines running. In storytelling, the hardest part is often the very beginning or the very end.

By providing a First-Line or a Last-Line, you remove the pressure of "what do I write about?" and let the drama take over. Itโ€™s one of my favourite ways to see B1+ students practise their narrative tenses and group cooperation.

Which of these lines would your students have the most fun with?
1๏ธโƒฃ "I wouldn't go in there..."
2๏ธโƒฃ "...and then he ate the goldfish."
