"Poetry is leading the City". Today the Presentation of the Candidacy at the Acropolis Musem
The Mayor of Lesvos and the Organizing Bid Committee for the Nomination of Lesvos as European Capital of Culture in 2021 are presenting today at the Acropolis Museum the initiative of the Municipality for this aim at the Auditorium of the Museum of the Acropolis, today, Monday, November 16 at 19:30
The first settlement on the ancient island dates back to the 4th millennium BC. As early as in 770 BC, Lesvos introduced the first democratic republic in Europe.
It is considered rare for a candidate European city for the institurion of European Capital of Culture to combine so many historical and cultural treasures for this European approach.
Mytilene with its unique geophysical beauty, the ancient and modern history, its pluralistic tradition, and its contribution to literature, painting, architecture, gastronomy lays the foundations for a strong candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2021.
Since last summer, the island's whole community Lesvos' citizens' efforts to cope with the refugees influx and the unprecedented European humanitarian crisis, upgraded the island to an ideal cradle of European civilization.
The President of the EU Parliament Martin Schulz on his recent visit to Lesvos, impressed by the "gigantic efforts" as the UNHCR High Commissioner António Guterres named it, to manage the refugee crisis, congratulated the Municipality's response and promised to support the Candidacy initiative of the Municipality for European Capital of Culture, while Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has stated that Mytilene is the Capital of Solidarity of Europe
