Reflections on a Greek Summer ☀️🌊

I have always been a little quieter during the summer, and that’s because summer has a strangely draining effect on my body and mind. Even though I love spending more carefree time by the sea, it often comes with a feeling of exhaustion and uneasiness that is hard to describe.

But this summer in particular, I consciously decided to preserve my energy by not talking or sharing too much on social media. I’m getting ready for a big change in my life - one that requires mental clarity and a level of calm that, at least for me, doesn’t really align with travelling a lot, meeting too many new people, or constantly being on the go.

So instead, I chose to remain consciously quiet. I read a lot, spent more time close to home, and stayed in places that either feel like home or are simply closer to my base.

And the reason for all this introspection?

We’ve made the decision to relocate to Melbourne for a second time.

Although this decision comes with a lot of excitement and anticipation, it also brings some uneasiness. It made me want to preserve my energy and spend this summer doing mostly things that don’t demand too much from me-physically, mentally, or emotionally.

And now you know. Haha.😉

To my beautiful Greek community of students and friends: stay tuned, because I’m up to something that I hope will keep us connected regardless of where I am in the world.

And to my friends, family, and yoga community in Melbourne: I’m really looking forward to reconnecting and sharing my work with you again, in the best way possible.

Throughout this series, we've explored how modern pain science helps us understand chronic pain; from the protective role of the nervous system, to the influence of thoughts, language, fear, and movement.

But long before neuroscience began studying pain, yoga philosophy was asking a different question:

How do we relate to our experiences?

The ancient teachings of yoga don't promise a pain-free body. They don't ask us to ignore pain or simply "think positively."

Instead, they offer practices that may help us meet pain or any other kind of discomfort with greater awareness, steadiness, and compassion.

•Ahimsa ( Yoga Sutra 2.35) reminds us to treat ourselves with kindness rather than self-criticism.

•Abhyasa & Vairagya ( Yoga Sutra 1.12) healing is nurtured through steady practice and letting go of expectations.

•And the Bhagavad Ghita reminds us that "Yoga is equanimity"(2.48) cultivating steadiness amidst life's changing experiences.

These teachings don't replace medical care, physiotherapy, or evidence-based pain management. Rather, they complement them by supporting how we relate to the challenges of living with persistent pain.

Perhaps healing isn't always about eliminating pain.

Sometimes, it's about discovering new ways to move, to breathe, and to live even in its presence.

💬 Which of these teachings resonates most with you today?

Ποιο από τα παραπάνω σημάδια αναγνωρίζεις περισσότερο στον εαυτό σου αυτή την περίοδο;

Many people living with chronic pain are not only dealing with pain itself, but also with the fear of pain.

After painful experiences, the nervous system may begin associating certain movements, positions, or activities with danger. Over time, movement can start to feel less predictable and less safe.

This can lead to what pain science often calls fear-avoidance:
avoiding bending, walking, lifting, twisting, exercising, or everyday activities because the brain has learned to anticipate pain.

This response is not irrational or dramatic. It is protective.

Pain changes behavior in intelligent ways.

At the same time, research suggests that long-term avoidance can sometimes increase sensitivity, reduce confidence, and contribute to ongoing disability and fear around movement.

This is where Graded Exposure may help.

Graded exposure means gradually and safely reintroducing movements or activities that have become associated with pain or fear.

Not through force.
Not by ignoring symptoms.
And not by "pushing through."

But through slow, supported, manageable experiences that help rebuild confidence and a sense of safety in the body.

In yoga, this may look like:
• moving more slowly
• reducing intensity
• using props and support
• practicing mindful breathing
• resting before overwhelm
• allowing choice and autonomy

The goal is not perfection. And the goal is not to convince yourself that pain is "all in your head."

The goal is to help the nervous system experience movement as less threatening over time.

Because healing is often less about fighting the body and more about rebuilding trust within it.

What daily movements or activities have you been avoiding because of fear or anticipation of pain? Let me know in the comments 👇

Thoughts and words are not "just in your head." They are real biological events.

Every thought, memory, sensation, or piece of language activates physical patterns of nerve activity in the brain-sometimes referred to as neurotags. These patterns can act like a volume k**b for your experience.

When the brain processes danger-based thoughts or threatening language like the following: "crumbling", "unstable", "out of place", or "damaged", it may interpret a higher level of threat.

Pain is often the brain’s protective response to perceived danger, not always a direct reflection of tissue damage.

This means that the words used by a doctor, teacher, coach, or even your own inner dialogue can influence a sensitive nervous system. Language can become either:
• a DIM (Danger In Me) that amplifies alarm or
• a SIM (Safety In Me) that promotes safety and regulation.

This week, try auditing your inputs-both mental and verbal.

Notice the labels you give your sensations during movement or yoga practice.

Instead of: "My back is stuck."
Try: "My nervous system is currently being protective around my back."

Instead of: "I’m broken."
Try: "My body is sensitive, adaptable, and learning."

Remind yourself:
You are bioplastic.
Your nervous system can change.
You can move safely, gradually, and mindfully.

And then notice…

How does the body respond when the language of danger softens into the language of safety?

Pain is not created only in the body.

It is an experience produced by the brain based on the information it receives and how it interprets it.

This system is designed to protect you.

But when pain persists, it can become more sensitive and start reacting more easily.

This does not mean your body is damaged.
It means your system has become more protective.

The important part is that this system can also change.

Through gentle movement, breath and awareness, we can begin to support it and create a sense of safety again.

Pain is not always a sign of damage.

In chronic pain, the nervous system can become more sensitive and send signals more easily.

This does not make the pain any less real.
It simply means the body is trying to protect you.

Practices such as gentle yoga, breath awareness and mindfulness can support the nervous system and help create a sense of safety.

This post is part of a series on understanding chronic pain through yoga.
