The buddy system is the foundation of safe freediving.
A buddy isn’t just someone who dives with you—they are your safety partner. While one diver is underwater, the other remains on the surface, maintaining constant supervision, following the final part of the ascent, and being ready to provide support if needed. This is the principle of “one up, one down.”
Being a good buddy requires training, attention, and communication. It’s a skill every freediver should develop—not just for their own safety, but for the safety of others.
That’s why it is an essential part of all our courses and training sessions. Learning how to dive safely and how to be a reliable buddy is an essential part of becoming a confident freediver.
Great freedivers don’t just train themselves—they look after each other.
