International Basketball Tournament 4on4 🏀
Lately, we have been experiencing major changes in our region that deeply affect our lives.
The rapid growth of tourism is making a huge impact on many aspects of our daily reality. The basic need for housing is turning into a luxury, the environment is being degraded, while local, authentic culture and identity are being dismantled at an alarming pace.
At the same time, wealthy foreign investors and financial interests—even from countries associated with criminal policies, such as Israel—are buying up and colonizing our island day by day, turning land, housing, and public space into merchandise.
The new opportunities for profit brought by tourism form a type of person driven by the pursuit of easy money and willing to sell their home, their history, and their culture, at the expense of social relationships, creativity, culture, and even the game itself.
Within these conditions, we are organizing an international 4on4 basketball tournament with the slogan:
“Hoops for play, not for sale.”
Our goals:
● to reclaim public space
● to strike up the conversation about overtourism in the city
● to listen to the groups across Europe that face similar challenges
● to exchange ideas and build collective responses to the monoculture of the tourism industry
The tournament will include:
■ 4on4 basketball games
■ open discussions
■ self-organized cultural activities
The event is co-organized by teams from Heraklion and Italy with the participation of collectives from all over Greece that are already active in this issue.
The event is open to everyone—to participate, discuss, intervene, or co-create.
