Martis (March Bracelet)

On March 1st mothers all over Greece braid bracelets for their children. The bracelets are called "Martis" and are made of a red and a white yarn twisted together. According to the tradition, the "Martis" protect the children's faces from the sun of Spring. In the end of March, the bracelets are left on the branches of trees so that the first swallows will use them to make their nests.

Την πρώτη μέρα του Μαρτίου μητέρες σε όλη την Ελλάδα συνηθίζουν να πλέκουν βραχιολάκια για τα παιδιά τους. Το βραχιόλι αυτό ονομάζεται "Μάρτης" και αποτελείται από κόκκινη και άσπρη κλωστή, στριφογυρισμένες μεταξύ τους. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, ο "Μάρτης" προστατεύει τα πρόσωπα των παιδιών από τον ανοιξιάτικο ήλιο. Στο τέλος του Μαρτίου, τα βραχιολάκια αφήνονται στα κλαδιά των δέντρων έτσι ώστε τα πρώτα χελιδόνια να φτιάξουν με αυτά τις φωλιές τους.
