Most people who want to practice Kung Fu have two main questions:
It is effective in self defence?
How much time I need in order to obtain a solid "foundation”?
a) The notion that Wushu (Kung Fu) lags behind other modern sports of combat (Krav Maga, Kick Boxing, MMA, etc), in its ability to prepare the trainee for a showdown in the street or in the ring is completely wrong and is mainly put forward by those who either have no idea what really Wushu is or have other motives (i.e. marketing) in order to disparage it.
The main idea of Mixed Martial Arts is that you take the best elements from each different style, using everything that is functional, and throwing away the rest.
This idea is not a discovery of our time.
Rather, it is a “label” that was put on to a very old idea, mainly in order to be re-launched as a new and promising product.
In Chinese martial arts, what all the founders of the various systems did, was exactly this, namely to engraft and evolve different styles into a new one. A typical example is Sun Lutang, who after having studied Xing Yi, Ba Gua, Taiji etc. for a number of years, created a new style of practice (Sun style Taiji). Now if someone upon hearing this, smiles, because he thinks that Taiji is just for the recreation of elderly people, he should be reminded of the Second Leitai Championship (Full Contact) held in 1929 in Hangzhou, three out of the first six fighters were students of Sun Lutang.
As for their intensity, these fights were much tougher than today's matches in cages. The rules were simply the following:
Each match had three rounds of three minutes. There were no kinds of protections, nor categories, all kind of hits were allowed, except using fingers to hurt the eyes (punches to the eyes were allowed), and blows to the ge****ls and the neck.
At the First Leitai Championship held in 1928 in Nanjing, given that after a few days of matches, two fighters had already been killed and many were seriously injured, the rest of the matches were aborted and the final ranking of the 15 athletes that were left standing was appointed by voting.
This forced (sic) the organization committee to include in the regulations of the Leitai Championship that was held in 1933 that in case a fighter is killed during the mach, his own team was responsible for paying for the funeral and the transportation costs of the dead contestant.*
Later in 1959, President Mao banned these fights and emphasis was given to the spread of Wushu mainly as a mass sport for cultivating the health of the Chinese people.
Yet in the army and the police full contact fighting (Sanda) never stopped to be exercised and evolve.
In 1979 the ban ended and the Secretary for the promotion of sports, got a mandate to develop rules for full contact fights. Three years later, Sanda was presented in official tournaments.
In 2008, following my teacher of Chinese wrestling, Liu Zu Quang, I attended many full contact fights as in Beijing such competitions are held every weekend.
Athletes from various styles take part in competitions of Sanda, wrestling, and groundfighting.
In short, no one discovered America, because America was always there for its residents.
While the emphasis of Wushu nowadays is properly given to the promotion of one's health it still carries the distilled experience of hundreds of thousands of combatants and teachers of the past in the development of fighting capability.
Nowadays, teachers who have been taught this aspect of Chinese martial arts are able, by drawing from this tradition, to effectively prepare someone to fight with an opponent in the ring or in the street.
b) Starting on 13th of January and for five consecutive months, a new class focused on Self Defense will be held at A.C.Kerameikos.
It will draw inspiration and will be based on the theory, the techniques, and the way of traditional Chinese styles that we practice in our athletic club.
Theory of punching and kicking, posture and fight position from Xing Yi, Eagle Claw, Sanda, as well as theory of wrestling from Shuai Jiao will all be incorporated in this Self Defense class.
It will be held 3 times a week and each time will cover a specific area.
On Mondays we will practice Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling),
on Wednesdays Sanda (full contact) and
on Fridays Eagle Claw Qi Na (locks), Chi shou and Strength Training.
Our goal is at the end of this period, those participating to be ready for their first full contact fight (Sanda).
For more information call at the club during class hours. Places are limited.

* this entirely true but gruesome and splatter narration is addressed to those who count the fighting ability with the amount of blood spilled in the ring, cage or Lei tai.
----------------------------------------
Είναι αποτελεσματικό στην αυτοάμυνα;
Σε πόσο καιρό μπορώ να αποκτήσω κάποια "βάση";
