New Blog Post: The Pond

Dear Friends,

Last spring when riding along the bike trail on his way to school, my son almost ran over a red-eared slider turtle and asked if he could bring it home. Seeing as they are an invasive species I said “sure, so long as you build me a turtle pond to house it in.”

So he set off to work, for the better part of the spring he was digging a hole and setting up the pond whenever he had time away from his classes. Once his brother came home from school the two of them went right to work continuing to build and improve that pond.

Countless hours of work, one missing turtle, a super cute tiny creek, pond plants growing like weeds, a bevy of mosquito-eating fish (which, by the way, are amazing at decimating mosquito larvae population, hooray!) a bunch of goldfish, and one adorable koi later and we have a pond that gives the three of us, plus the birds, the squirrels, the bees and the local neighborhood cats immense amounts of joy. The vision isn’t fully complete yet, but it’s on its way.

Mr. turtle might not be around anymore, but he sure was an inspiration in our backyard.

We all get inspiration in life at times. Sometimes that inspiration comes in the form of joyful and fun circumstances, and sometimes, sometimes that inspiration comes in the form of heartache and sadness…but even after the reason for the inspiration has disappeared, whether that inspiration was fortunate or unfortunate, we can still choose to use that momentum, that inspiration for good in our lives.

I hope you have an inspired week, my friend.

New Blog Post: Heyday

Dear Friends,

While I was in California last week we spent a day in San Francisco, and one of the stops we made was the ruins of the Sutro Baths. Built in 1894 by millionaire Adolpho Sutro, these sprawling seawater baths contained 7 pools of various temperatures, holding up to 10,000 people in its facility.

The ruins were fun to wander, I had always wanted to see them, but hadn’t prior to this visit. While they were fun to wander, I couldn’t help but think that the baths themselves must have been wildly impressive in their heyday.

Now they are just remainders of a time past and gone, but even in those remainders, there is beauty in the ruins.

My dear friend, I hope you can see the beauty in the past, and the beauty in the present. They may look and feel different, one may be more or less spectacular than the other, there may be spaces in past or present that hold no beauty…and yet, the beauty is there.

Have an amazing week.

New Blog Post: Find the Magic

Dear Friends,

A week or so ago I went on a walk along the creek as the world was growing dark. It was a beautifully mild evening, the temperature was perfect and was not overly humid, and the fireflies along the creek were out in force.

They never fail to be magical, those fireflies. They come every year, and every year, my friends, they are still just as magical as the last.

I walked along the creek, listening to the water running, and noticing a particular tree that seemed to be more prolific with fireflies than most, and just enjoying this beautiful evening around me. After I got back to the street, I looked up and noticed what looked to be a barred owl on a line, and sure enough, as I got closer, the owl flew away.

If it’s been a while since you’ve spent some time stopping and noticing the magic around you, I would encourage you to slow down, to spend some time noticing, to see and enjoy the world around you. There’s beauty and magic around us, my friend, if only we stop long enough to notice it.

Have an amazing week.

New Blog Post: Deep Belonging

Dear Friends,

I’ve been thinking about my childhood home a lot lately, and the one thing that continues to stand out to me is my childhood home was a home of deep welcoming, of deep belonging.

It was a small house, full of 5 kids, various extras living with us at any given time, with pet cats, rabbits, snakes, chickens, rats, turtles and a tarantula for a while, a canoe trailer full of canoes and a couple of 15 passenger vans frequently living in the driveway, and pretty near constant chaos.

I had this spot up a tree in the front yard and a spot on the roof where I would frequently hang out and read or just be, because sometimes you just needed a quiet place of your own, which was hard to come by.

But it was a house where you always knew you belonged, no matter who you were or what time you stopped by.

My brother-in-law tells the story of the first time he came over. My mom had to feed him, because, well, you couldn’t come over without being fed…and so her offering was a hot dog and broccoli wrapped in a tortilla, because that was all she had in the house.

Thinking about it, I don’t think all of our houses need to be places where anyone can stop by at any time…I think that’s a place of personal preference and very personal wants and needs and, frankly, not all are built for near constant chaos…but I certainly hope that you’ve experienced those places, those spaces of deep welcoming and deep belonging…where you know you’ll be accepted, no matter how or when you show up.

Have an amazing week, my friend.

New Blog Post: The Ancient and the Modern Again

Dear Friends,

I was thinking more about the mixture of the ancient and the modern again this past week. As I walked through the city in Athens last month, on any given street there would be ruins, remnants of an ancient world interspersed among the present world. The ancient and the modern, together.

I’m headed to California next week. Part of the reason I’m going is to help my parents pack up my childhood home, their home of 49 years, to move to another state. There’s a mixture of emotions there, packing a house that is filled with all of my childhood, and some of my children’s childhood memories. While there is sadness and loss in that move, there is also a deep excitement in the life they will be able to build ahead of them, there is a deep gratitude that my parents get to move before they have to, when they get to make the choice for themselves instead of circumstances making that choice for them.

The sadness and loss, and the excitement and gratitude can be held simultaneously, because we hold multitudes of emotions. We don’t have to feel one way or another, we can hold all. Just like those streets that hold both ancient and modern, we can hold multitudes.

I hope you have an amazing week, my friend.

New Blog Post: Over the Rainbow

Dear Friends,

A few days ago I was chatting with my son on the phone. He was on his way home from work, I was on my way to a class. It was rush hour in DC, coupled with the fact that it was on and off raining, and, as you can imagine, traffic was something fierce.

We had our fair share of complaints about the traffic situation as we chatted. Our frustrations did not go by unnoticed

As we sat there whining to each other in our respective vehicles, a bright rainbow burst out of the clouds and appeared all the way across the sky. The two of us saw it simultaneously and stopped our whining to wax poetic about the beautiful rainbow that had just moved into our vision.

The rainbow didn’t stop the traffic from happening, my friends. The two of us were still frustrated about the state of Downtown DC and our navigation through the city. And even in that frustration, we got to share this magical glimpse of beauty in our day.

Sometimes those places and spaces of beauty aren’t enough to stop and erase the trials and frustrations in our lives. And yet, my friends, we can still stop, enjoy, and notice the beauty and the magic all around us.

Have a wonderful week, my friend.

New Blog Post: The Ancient and the Modern

Dear Friends,

There are remnants of an ancient world interspersed in various metro stops in Athens, Greece. It is said that the building of the Athens metro system facilitated the largest archaeological excavation in Greek history, uncovering over 50,000 ancient artifacts and turning some of the transit stations into underground museums of a sort.

I stumbled upon one such site as I came out at the Monastiraki Station a few weeks ago when wandering Athens for the day post-retreat. I hadn’t heard about this ahead of time, and was surprised to see a super archaeological display as I was exiting the metro.

The ancient and the modern, intermingled together.

I was thinking about that with our own lives. We don’t do away with the old when we integrate the new in our lives…this life is full of journeys and changes and areas where we can both shift and change, while simultaneously recognizing the importance and beauty of where we were before.

My dear friend, I hope, as you travel along, you are able to see the importance of the here and now, and also the importance of where you were along the way.

Have an amazing week.

New Blog Post: What a Difference Some Sun Makes

Dear Friends,

The sun came out yesterday!

After 9 straight days of rain and cloudiness, the sun was shining today in a spectacular fashion.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the rain. We’re in a drought in the DC/Maryland area, and having been born and raised in California and frequently in drought, I always love and appreciate rain. This time of year I especially love how green it turns the world, how the creeks and streams grow fuller and faster, how the rain creates beautiful colors around us.

Even so, when the sky turned blue this morning and the sun came out, when the birds were singing in the trees around my house it was absolutely magical…what a difference some sun can make in our lives.

There are times when it feels like we are perpetually under the clouds, with no sun, with no relief in sight…and if that’s you right now I hope you can find a little respite, a little blue sky, a little sun peaking out behind the clouds even if the clouds are still largely there.

Have an amazing week, my friend.

New Blog Post: The Winding Road Again

Dear Friends,

I was thinking about those Cycladic roads again this week, about how they work with the terrain around them instead of blasting through said terrain…and about acceptance and love of ourselves exactly as we are and where we are.

We visited this beautiful monastery built into a cliff while we were on Amorgos. Legend has it that the monks who were building it first built it closer to the water, but the building materials kept falling down each night. Finally, one of the tools was found high up on the cliffside, and the monks decided, instead of the original spot, the cliffside spot was where they were called to build their monastery.

Sometimes, in our very understandable rigidity, we get stuck in the thinking that acceptance of where we are now, and allowing ourselves to view ourselves as worthy and enough just as we are means we can’t move and shift from where we are. But, my friends, like that cliffside monastery, our lives are not either/or. They are both/and. We are both worthy and enough just as we are, right here and right now, and also, we are able to shift and change if we want or need to.

My dear friend, I hope you can see your own worthiness here and now, just as you are…and I hope you can know that whatever future iteration of you is just as worthy also.

Have an amazing week.
