WE have lived here for 2 years, and only noticed this strange trunk like thing in the vegetable section at the supermarket the other day. I asked what it was and i was told 'Kolokasi', after a bit of googling found out its called Taro in English and only grown in Cyprus and Ikaria in Europe. According to wikipedia 'In Greece, taro grows on Icaria. Icarians credit taro for saving them from famine during World War II. They boil it until tender and serve it as a salad. So going to cook this tonight.
Taro root salad is one of the great longevity dishes of Ikaria.
