Η Αίγυπτος που δεν περιμέναμε να ανακαλύψουμε 🏺
Αυτό που μας έμεινε από το πρώτο μας ταξίδι στο Fayoum δεν ήταν μόνο η έρημος, αλλά ολόκληρο το τοπίο: η όαση, οι φοίνικες, οι λίμνες, τα χωριά, τα κεραμικά και τα χρώματα, με την έρημο πάντα κάπου πέρα από αυτά. 🌿 Κάτι παράξενα διαχρονικό — σαν η γη των Φαραώ, όπως τη φανταζόμασταν διαβάζοντας για την Αρχαία Αίγυπτο, να γίνεται ξαφνικά πραγματικότητα. ✨
Και μετά υπάρχει το Tunis Village, όπου βρίσκεται το Dar Bul Bul. Ήσυχο, αλλά όχι τουριστική «φούσκα» — εργαστήρια, οικογένειες, παιδιά, ζώα, καλλιέργειες, άνθρωποι που συνεχίζουν την καθημερινότητά τους. Για εμάς ήταν ένα παράθυρο σε μια Αίγυπτο που σπάνια προβάλλεται έτσι: της τοπικής ζωής, των τεχνών, του φαγητού, της εξαιρετικής φιλοξενίας.
Επιστρέψαμε πέρυσι με την ομάδα του retreat, και κάποιοι από εσάς το ζήσατε μαζί μας. Αυτό μας επιβεβαίωσε πως θέλουμε μια μακροχρόνια συνεργασία με τη Sarah και τον Fadi — πιστεύουμε πραγματικά στη μαγεία αυτού του τόπου.
Χαιρόμαστε ιδιαίτερα που το retreat πραγματοποιείται μέσα στην εβδομάδα των Χριστουγέννων. 🎄 Για την οικογένειά μας, τα Χριστούγεννα είναι η περίοδος που «αποϋλοποιούμε» τις γιορτές — ταξιδεύουμε αντί να συσσωρεύουμε πράγματα, δίνοντας στα παιδιά μας μια διαφορετική οπτική. Θέλουμε ζεστασιά, γενναιοδωρία, φιλία και κοινές εμπειρίες, όχι επίδειξη πλούτου.
Έτσι, τα Χριστούγεννα στην Αίγυπτο μαζί μας θα είναι απλά: καλό φαγητό, ζεστά βράδια, στιγμές ενσυνειδητότητας, φιλία και χρόνος μαζί. ❤️
Φέτος αποφασίσαμε να γνωρίσουμε το Fayoum διαφορετικά. Μετά την περσινή εμπειρία, συνειδητοποιήσαμε ότι το Fayoum και η γύρω περιοχή προσφέρουν ήδη αρκετά για μια πλούσια εβδομάδα — γι' αυτό επιλέγουμε να επιβραδύνουμε.

What stayed with us after our first journey to Fayoum was not only the desert.
It was the whole landscape: the oasis, the agricultural fields, the palms, the lakes, the villages, the ceramics and the colours, with the desert always present somewhere beyond them. 🌿
There is something strangely timeless about it.
If you have ever read novels or books about Ancient Egypt and imagined what the land of the Pharaohs might have looked like, there are moments in Fayoum when that imagined landscape suddenly feels very real. The agricultural fields, the waterways, the palms and the desert beyond them create an atmosphere that seems to belong to another time. ✨
Then there is Tunis Village, where Dar Bul Bul is located.
It is peaceful, but it isn't a tourist bubble. Life is happening all around you: workshops, families, children, animals, agriculture and people simply going about their day.
For us, Dar Bul Bul became our first experience of an Egypt that goes well beyond the familiar travel clichés. It felt like a window onto a country that is rarely promoted in quite this way — an Egypt of local life, crafts, food, landscapes and extraordinary hospitality.
We came back last year with our retreat group, and some of you experienced this for yourselves.
That experience confirmed something for us: rather than treating Fayoum as a place we simply visit once, we want to build a long-term partnership with Sarah and Fadi, because we genuinely believe in the magic of this place and in its potential for the kind of retreats we want to create.
There is another reason why we are particularly happy to be returning during this period: the retreat takes place over Christmas week. 🎄
For our family, Christmas has gradually become a time when we try to do the opposite of what the season often encourages us to do. We have made something of a tradition of “dematerialising” Christmas — travelling rather than accumulating, and offering our children another perspective on this time of year.
We want Christmas to be about warmth, generosity, friendship and shared experiences rather than a demonstration of wealth and materiality. This is one of the reasons we tend to travel at this time of year, whether we are organising a retreat or simply travelling as a family.
So Christmas in Egypt with us will be quite simple: good food, warm evenings, mindful moments, friendship, time together and a few carefully chosen gifts. A different way of marking the end of the year, in a place where the rhythm of everyday life gives us plenty of opportunities to reconnect with what actually matters. ❤️
And this year, we've decided to discover Fayoum differently.
After last year's experience, we realised that there was no need to constantly move from one destination to another. Fayoum and its immediate surroundings already offer more than enough for a rich and varied week.
