The Role

The Role The role event is a programme that seeks to educate the media, security services and the political parties about peaceful, free and fair elections.

Elections can be a key element either in both conflict resolution and conflict escalation. Therefore, free and fair elections are essential for democracy consolidation and conflict prevention. In a democratic society, the media have the duty to disseminate information that aims at influencing the way voters cast their ballot and citizens must have adequate information to make informed choices. The

professionalism of the Media is crucial during elections periods. The Media must therefore be taught how to report on campaigns and elections, how to organise televised debates, how to produce programming about elections and the electoral process and, most importantly, how to maintain transparent elections and hold elected officials accountable for decisions. This training programme is designed to take media practitioners at every level, through the essentials
of elections reporting and an overview of the basic skills required to establish and maintain high levels
of professionalism in their work particularly at this time. The course consists of a series of workshops covering a Five (5) day period that will cover introductory concepts about elections and specific techniques for reporting on elections.

The media plays a major role in keeping the citizenry abreast of current events and raising awareness of various issues in any society. It also has an extremely significant impact on the public’s views and way of thinking. The media is the primary means through which public opinion is shaped and at times manipulated. If this is the media’s role then in normal course of events, it becomes even more vital in exceptional periods, one of which is electoral junctures, when the media becomes a primary player. “Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.”

In elections, the professionalism of the Media is crucial. The Media is often used to disseminate electoral information, and as such, plays several very important roles. The power of the Media to reach so many potential voters, and the faith of the citizens in what it reads on the newspapers, hears on the radio, and sees on TV, gives the Media a responsibility towards the public to provide accurate, fair, and balanced reporting, and in its advertising, to ensure equal access and treatment to all.
