What an honour and privilege it was to conduct the Celebration of Life ceremony today for the most wonderful lady and a long life well lived. Filled with love and happy memories, a highlight was a singalong to The Beatles Yellow Submarine, a special family memory and it was sung with gusto and smiles! And such lovely comments from family and friends as they left with one gentleman telling me with a smile that I had her ‘to a tee’. This means a lot to me as I strive to ensure that each ceremony I conduct is totally personal and meaningful to their loved one’s family, reflecting their loved one and their lives. I’m delighted to share with you the inaugural Funeral Celebrant Day! A day where celebrants nationally are working together to raise awareness of the variety and importance of the work we do.

I’m often asked, what is a celebrant and what do you do? A celebrant–led funeral ceremony is an alternative to the more traditional church funeral in that it can include anything you like and you have the choice of where it’s held.

Losing someone close is often bewildering and needs a caring, compassionate and sensitive approach. Carefully listening to families and their wishes for their loved one’s final farewell is imperative. My purpose as a celebrant is to craft and conduct a beautiful, personal, meaningful ceremony that celebrates and positively reflects the life of a loved one.

Can you connect directly with a funeral celebrant ? Yes! As an independent celebrant, I work alongside Funeral Directors, however, not many people realise that you can choose your celebrant, directly approach and book, just like you would a wedding celebrant. We will then liaise with the FD.

Though as certain as taxes, as the saying goes, the subject of death and funeral planning can still be taboo and some find it difficult to talk about their final wishes with family. So in addition to conducting ceremonies , I provide future farewell ceremony planning, not to be confused with a funeral plan that you would arrange with an FD, this is about you telling your own story, choosing what you would like your own ceremony content and farewell to look like.

I consider it an honour to support families and conduct their loved one’s celebrations of life. When families feel they have given their loved one a fitting send off, I believe that this can often help in the grieving process.
