History and Culture as a Factors of Rural Tourism Development in Mountainous Georgia
Abstract
International Center for Caucasus Tourism, ICCT, founded in 2007. Provides rural population with International standards of hospitality and conducts researches, especially, in mountainous rural areas. Historical and cultural heritage plays a huge role in the development of rural tourism also becoming as one of the opportunities for economic, social and cultural revitalization. Each region of Georgia is known for its different history and culture, including folklore, cuisine, customs and habits. Since 2009, ICCT implemented number of projects in Racha region, a high mountainous area of Western Georgia, known for historical and cultural sites, amazing nature with mineral springs in Alpium Zone. The objects of historical and cultural heritage, being an important asset of this rural area, bring profit and significantly influence on rural tourism development. Adherents of rural tourism came to Racha not only to relax and eat organic food, but also to enjoy sightseeing. One of the privileged projects was the initiative to establish Cycle and Rural Tourism Center in the 300-yearold stony house in resort village Utsera, Upper Racha, Region. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063214487865
This action was recognized by UNWTO as an innovative step and awarded with a Letter of Appreciation in 2018. Utsera Center is still the first in the South Caucasus and visited by rural tourists from different countries. In 2020, a memorial museum was open here with an exposition of historical books, photos, objects that belonged to ancestors. Scientists from Georgia and European countries are very often invited to workshops, seminars and expeditions. Utsera Center maintains permanent relations with Ilia State University, Institute of Zoology to participate in joint projects. Currently rural tourism training is included in the project: "Healthy soil for safety food" funded by the Rustaveli Foundation.
