2026 sees Yoxall Sports Club celebrating 80 years of sport at Weaverslake Sports Field on Hadley St , in 1946 a group of cricketers approached the local farmer Harry Walker about using part of his field in Hadley St for use as a cricket pitch to which he kindly agreed. In the early 1970’s when the field was extended football began to be played to which a number of teams have since played football at Weaverslake.
The photos we have come across show a number of Yoxall football teams since the end of the 2nd World War, when Ernie Timmis re founded Yoxall Rangers in 1946 , Ernie Timmis went on to become not only an employer to many of the village people at his sawmill at Hazelbank (now Grangewood) but he became a stalwart of local football. Over the years there has been 2 Yoxall United teams run by Ernie , a consistent Yoxall Rangers team , a team formed as Crown Jubilee in 1977 ran by an village resident Harry Withey who due to the type of football they played became known locally as “ Withey’s Axemen “ , the Foresters Arms also had a team set up by Mark Raworth & Nigel Gould.
As you can see from a couple of the photo’s you will notice Roger House who was famed for his involvement in Yoxall Cricket Club but during the winter Roger was also a very effective linesman for Yoxall Rangers.
If anyone has any other photo’s of sport in Yoxall we would love to see them & if you can tag us in to your post it would be appreciated.
During the summer the Sports Club is planning to celebrate the 80 years milestone with community based sports competitions & if you have any ideas for them we would love to hear them .
