If the weather is really horrible, I sometimes give my partner a lift to work. Whilst I'd rather be cycling than stuck in slow moving traffic, it does allow me a different perspective on cyclist safety.

Like other considerate car drivers, I will try to leave a space for cars coming from the opposite direction to turn right through the line of vehicles. However, I am sometimes aware of cyclists to my left simply belting down the cycle lane with no chance stopping if someone does turn across their path.

Remember you are potentially not visible to these cars, who are doing nothing wrong. You may also have difficulty seeing them until the last minute because you are cycling outside vehicles of all sizes.

To avoid this, as ever, cycle at a speed which allows you to stop quickly and safely if necessary. If you see a gap in the traffic, assume someone could be turning from your right and be ready to slow down. You may also wish to help the car turning by waving them across and promoting goodwill between cars and bikes!

This week, I would like to share my 'local knowledge' of a particular junction in the Fishergate area of York.

When cycling out of town along Fishergate, pay close attention to cars turning left out of Cemetery Road. Vehicles pulling out of here may not be as aware of cyclists as they should be. This is because, firstly, the junction is angled, making it harder for drivers to see cyclists. Secondly, the trees and post box near to the junction mean that for a split second, cyclists are not visible.

I have seen cars appear to look, but still pull out in front of bikes.

Remember to make eye contact with drivers to be confident they have seen you and be ready to brake.

If anyone has any similar local knowledge which may help cyclists, please let me know so that I can include it in future posts!

A friend was recently knocked off his bike when a car driver opened their door as he was passing.

The best way to avoid this happening is, if possible, to cycle at least the width of the car door away from parked cars. You may be surprised just how wide a car door is. Next time you are in a car, it may be a good idea to have a look and see how far away you need to be.

As ever, cycling at a speed where you can stop quickly and safely will help. Car drivers pulling up outside shops tend to be in a hurry and may be more likely to open their doors without checking for bikes.

Back to school!

If you and/or your kids are planning on doing the school run by bike, now is the perfect time to check the safety of your cycle helmets.

If your helmet is not the right size, does not fit correctly or is not in good condition, it may not be offering you maximum protection.

The following YouTube clips offer good advice about how to fit and adjust your helmet, and on choosing a new one.

My advice is to buy in-store rather than online, so you can try it on. Also, check that date inside the helmet, which tells you when it was made. It is recommended that you should not use a helmet that is more than 5 years old.

A quick weekly safety check is essential. Check the following for safer cycling:

1. Make sure your brakes will stop you – if the levers come back as far as the handle bars, they need adjusting.

2. Make sure handle bars are not loose. Hold the front wheel between your knees, and if they can turn, they need to be tightened.

3. Make sure quick release levers (if you have them) on wheels are tight, especially if you are removing wheels to get your bike in and out of a car.

4. Make sure tyres are in good condition and are fully pumped up. Cycling on soft tyres can be like cycling though sand – much harder than it needs to be!
