I can give you all the science about why play matters.

How it can support mood, cognitive flexibility, coordination and motor learning.

How movement and play can interrupt rumination, give your attention somewhere
new to go, help you notice different signals from your body and leave you feeling a
little more settled afterwards.

I could give you all of that.
But if you have a tendency to be a do-er like me, something ridiculous happens.

Play becomes another job.

Another thing to optimise.
Another thing to schedule.
Another thing to get right.
Which rather misses the point.

So just for today, forget whether it is good for your brain.

Do something whimsical.
Silly.
Joyful.
Entirely unnecessary.

Not because it improves anything.

Just because you can.

One class, a million successes. None of these women had been upside down since
they were at school.

No gymnastics backgrounds.
No lifelong circus skills.

Just people who showed up and
trusted me enough to try something that felt a little ridiculous and quite a lot
impossible.

The light that is Mariella spent weeks in the awkward kick-up phase. The wobble. The
near-misses. The I don't think this is working days.

This week, she found the most beautiful hold.
It was considerably better than my first one.

Our wonderful Nikki has been chasing a second pull-up for a while.

This week she got it.
She actually got three, but naturally I didn't have the camera rolling for that set.

Elegant Angela told me more than once that she would never get upside down. Ever!
She is now the one the rest of the class watches with awe.

Our sweetest Michaela came out of nowhere. Last week the wall was miles away.

Not only did she nail a kick-up, and add a box behind her, a drill that still makes me
nervous and I've been doing this for years, she found a hold.
Three times.

And Kay is our ring queen.
She skins the cat like she was born for the circus, rather than someone who first picked
up a pair of rings three weeks ago.

None of this required a gymnastics background.
It happened because they kept coming back to something unfamiliar.

They tried. Wobbled. Missed. Tried again.

Long after the first attempt had given them absolutely no evidence that they would ever
get it.

Talent isn't the story here.
Trust is.
Trust in the process.
Trust in me.
And, little by little, trust in themselves.

I am ridiculously proud of all of them. They make my heart happy.

These aren't even all the stories.

Somehow, being upside down has become one of the times I feel most like me.

When I turn the world around, my brain has to stop trying to solve everything else.

It has a new job.

Where am I?
What needs to move?
What needs to stay still?

My vestibular system, vision, muscles and brain all have to work together to understand where my body is in space. That strong, immediate demand for attention gives the noise less room to follow me up there.

Calm.
We are here.
We are okay.

Turning the world around starts a new conversation in my body.

It does not take away the bone-tired feeling of there being a lot going on. It does not make the hard things disappear.

But it gives my brain space where, moments earlier, there was none.

That is why I train.

Not always for strength.
Not always for the skill or the next progression.

Sometimes I train simply to remind my nervous system that it still knows how to find its way home.
