Match Report - York Dukes v Bishopthorpe White Rose Coaches
The Dukes were back in action for their final pre-season friendly, this time welcoming Bishopthorpe White Rose Coaches to Wilberfoss.
The lads arrived early and, thankfully, the grass was considerably greener than the yellow stuff from the previous week. In fact, it looked so much like an actual football pitch that several Dukes players briefly considered whether they were in the wrong place.
First order of the day was informing Gommy, our promising young centre-back of just 53 years old, that he would be playing in goal for the opposition. You could literally see the enthusiasm filling his youthful face. Either that or it was pure fear. Difficult to tell at that age.
The Gaffer then took charge of the warm-up and it's safe to say the lads were warmer than a Greggs sausage roll fresh out of the oven by the time he'd finished with them. Someone really needs to remind The Tinkerman that the average age of his squad is approaching 40 and several players require a longer warm-up than most domestic appliances.
Meanwhile, the opposition were having a gentle stroll around, knocking a few easy passes between themselves and looking about as cool as a Greggs sausage roll before it enters the oven.
Everything was set perfectly for the chaos that was about to unfold.
First Half – The Dukes Forget How Football Works
The Dukes started by attempting to follow every instruction The Tinkerman had given them:
Move the ball around at the back.
Keep possession.
Keep it simple.
Don't force it.
Unfortunately, they managed to do all of those things exceptionally badly.
Simple passes were being missed. Possession was being handed back like unwanted Christmas presents. The ball seemed to spend more time with Bishopthorpe than it did with anyone wearing a Dukes shirt.
Bishopthorpe were absolutely loving it, easily regaining possession and repeatedly getting in behind the wing-backs.
The response from The Dukes?
Internal HR complaints, publicly broadcast across the football pitch.
Thankfully for the travelling side, Bishopthorpe were feeling particularly charitable in front of goal.
It wasn't until midway through the first half that they finally unleashed a powerful effort from inside the box, forcing the Dukes keeper quickly down to his right to make a good save.
A few moments later, the resulting corner was parried away, creating a scramble in the box. Thankfully, Bishopthorpe continued their charitable work and could only manage a tame effort straight at the keeper.
Still 0-0.
Then came the moment that had the thousands of Dukes fans in uproar...
Well, the two injured players watching from the sidelines, anyway.
Around five minutes later, Bishopthorpe produced what can only be described as a tactical masterclass.
A ball over the top.
Yes... another ball over the top.
Only about the 50th time they'd tried it during the first half, but eventually the Dukes defence decided to give it some consideration.
Caught sleeping, the keeper came rushing out for a one-on-one at the edge of the box. The Bishopthorpe forward scuffed his effort and, in what felt like slow motion, the ball began trickling towards goal.
Dukes skipper Olly had several yards on the attacker and looked an absolute certainty to clear it.
Then came the plot twist.
The Bishopthorpe forward slid straight through the back of Olly, wiping him out and somehow nudging the ball over the line.
Foul, you might be thinking?
That's what the thousands of Dukes fans thought.
That's what the Dukes players thought.
That's what Olly definitely thought.
The referee, Mr Tonks, however, was clearly also enjoying Bishopthorpe's charitable afternoon and decided to let the goal stand.
SHOCKING.
Dukes 0-1 Bishopthorpe.
Thankfully, the Dukes somehow made it to half-time only one goal behind, despite recording a pass completion percentage roughly equivalent to your chances of winning the Euromillions.
Half-Time – The Tinkerman Goes to Work
The Tinkerman had some serious tinkering to do.
This time, however, he wasn't tinkering with the formation.
He was tinkering with the morale.
And how did he do?
Bloody marvellous.
Second Half – The Actual Dukes Finally Arrive
The Dukes emerged for the second half like a completely different team.
Bishopthorpe suddenly couldn't get hold of the ball, while The Dukes were absolutely flying.
Possession? Better.
Passing? Better.
Complaining? Still world-class.
And now...
Who wants another shocking referee decision?
From a Dukes corner, Olly — having remarkably recovered from being wiped out earlier — bundled the ball over the line from close range to make it 1-1.
Or so everyone thought.
Mr Tonks, still apparently running the Bishopthorpe Appreciation Society, ruled the goal out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
The only slight problem?
Replays showed it was actually his own defender who pushed him over.
Never mind.
The Dukes weren't going to let that stop them.
Moments later, Pedro found himself through on goal and was brought down.
Finally.
A decision went the right way.
PENALTY TO THE DUKES!
After missing the week before, Pedro was immediately spotted somewhere in the nearby trees, doing his best to avoid eye contact with the ball.
Everyone then looked nervously towards Chris, who also has an absolutely impeccable penalty record...
(NOT.)
Thankfully, Chris didn't volunteer.
Up stepped Fenno.
And what followed can only be described as the least Dukes-like penalty ever witnessed.
Not only did he hit the target...
IT WAS TOP BINS.
The ball was buried in the back of the net.
1-1. GAME ON.
The chances continued to come for The Dukes. Bishopthorpe were rattled and, at this point, looked like they'd rather be anywhere else.
Even our very own Postman — named not because he always delivers, but because he's actually a postman — nearly buried one from the edge of the box.
Well...
I say nearly.
If the goal had been about five feet higher and three feet wider, he'd have absolutely buried it.
But he didn't half catch it.
The Dukes Smell Blood
The pressure continued and, with around 15 minutes remaining, The Dukes finally took the lead.
Some tidy work down the right from Liam — who appears to be flourishing in his new role as a winger — created the opportunity for Sam, who calmly tucked the ball away from around 10 yards.
2-1 DUKES!
Normally, this is the part where we say:
Football can be cruel.
NOT THIS TIME.
The Dukes remained composed during the closing stages. Bishopthorpe looked resigned to defeat.
The Dukes?
They smelled blood.
Pedro was causing problems down the left and found space to square the ball to Chris.
The entire Dukes team collectively held their breath.
Chris was standing around the penalty spot with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Historically...
This isn't always his strongest position.
But this time, he calmly slotted the ball past Gommy in the Bishopthorpe goal.
3-1.
And that was the last kick of the game.
Full-Time – Dukes 3-1 Bishopthorpe
Definitely a game of two halves.
The first half was one we'd all quite happily delete from memory.
The second half, however, showed exactly what The Dukes are capable of.
Coming from behind, scoring three and putting in a brilliant second-half performance made it a thoroughly deserved victory.

Final Note ❤️
All of The Dukes would like to wish Greeny a speedy recovery.
While defending valiantly during the second half, we believe the entire village of Wilberfoss heard his hamstring pop.
We won't say it was loud...
But several local residents reportedly checked whether there'd been an earthquake.
Recover quickly, mate! 💙⚽
