Derwent Self Defence Club

Derwent Self Defence Club Self defence classes based in East Riding of Yorkshire

Affiliated with Bearsden Martial Arts, the club has its roots in Shotokai Karate but, reflecting the interests of the senior instructors, has evolved to incorporate elements of many martial arts, such as judo, jiu-jitsu and aikido. The over-arching principle is one of self defence and the emphasis is on self development and continual improvement so there is no competitive fighting element to what we do.

All set at Goole Civic Society with lots of interesting stalls and people. Come and say hello 👋

🤸A small class tonight but we covered a lot! We were working on throws that are similar to those found in judo. Sweeps, hip throws, throws from a kick attack and from a grab. Throws might not be what you think of for self defence but they can be really useful to get out of tight situations. They also build power, balance, control which is useful for pretty much everything!
And we practice landing safely so if you're on the wrong end of a throw, you can land without damaging yourself and still defend against the attacker.
Great work tonight folks. More next week 👊

If you are able to donate, we'd be very grateful

Autumn is just around the corner and we’re kicking off our 2026 charity fundraiser - BMAC’s Fall Brawl is coming!

On Saturday 24 October, we’re going to take on a huge endurance challenge: 9 hours of continuous training in the Hub at Bearsden Cross.

This year we’re supporting Beatson Cancer Charity, chosen in memory of a member’s dad who passed away last year after a brave battle with cancer.

Every year, around 35,000 people in Scotland are diagnosed with cancer, and Beatson Cancer Charity is there to make sure no one faces that diagnosis alone.

Our JustGiving page is now live, and we’d love your support. Please donate and help us to spread the word by sharing the link.

This is BMAC’s fourth charity challenge and with your support, let’s make our Fall Brawl the biggest and most meaningful yet. 💛💜

It's the last Thursday of the month so can only mean one thing... its kata night!

Kata, also known as patterns or forms can look a bit flouncy but they're a great way to build muscle memory and effective stance and posture so if you ever need it, it's there in your muscles ready to go.

Also gets the brain cells working!

It's new warm up day!
A mix of cardio, stretch, strength and technique to make every minute of the warm up count towards our training.
We're working on kicks so plenty of hip exercises in there

Waaay back in January we held a course and grading but unfortunately, due to injury, Christine couldn't complete the entire grading. Last night she finished the job and achieved her yellow belt. We are so proud of her and her determination plus a fabulous hip throw! Well done Christine!

Congratulations Rachel from all of us at DSDC 👊

Last week, one of the members had seen some self defence techniques online and wanted to try them out. So we did. Some of them really didn't work for us so we played around to see what DID work.
No need for complicated moves. Simple techniques that work.

Fabulous work from Bearsden Martial Arts Club we hope to join you for this year's event 👊

Fabulous work from Bearsden Martial Arts Club we hope to join you for this year's event 👊

We’re absolutely delighted that our 40th birthday has been recognised with a Scottish Parliament motion. Everyone involved with BMAC is very proud of the club, our efforts to make martial arts as accessible as possible, and our fundraising for good causes.

A big thank you to our local MSP Marie McNair MSP for raising the motion and supporting the club.
