⚽️Match Report⚽️
Sheffield Hallam vs York St John University
19th October
Both teams started off the game strongly with chances coming at both ends. The game was physical and high intensity from the off so the girls knew they were in for a tough game. The back four of Charlotte Knowles, Jasmine Sanders, Kerry Heslop and Kazia Walby were pressured right from the start, but they handled the pressure well, stopping Sigrid Sekkingstad in goal from having to save many shots. About 20 minutes in, the first goal came. After Kerry Heslop put in another great challenge, she passed the ball to Aimee Hickingbotham in the middle, who played it out wide to Ada Czerwinska. With speed and determination, Ada ran past the Hallam full back and blasted her shot into the goal. 1-0 Johns.
The game became increasingly more physical, with fouls from Hallam coming in all over the pitch. In the middle, Emily Boyeson was breaking up the play well, staying strong to continuously win the ball back. York St. John held onto their lead well to get to half time on top.
Half time: 1-0 Johns
York St. John started the second half very quickly, scoring almost straight from kick off. After the ref had warned Hallam of bookings if any more fouls came in on Aimee, Hallam players looked hesitant to tackle her. She picked up the ball from Fran Edwards and dribbled past several Hallam players. Kasia Berdys then made a great overlapping run and Aimee passed it down the line to her. Kasia took one touch and played a nice ball into the box, which Chloe Jackson finished brilliantly. 2-0 Johns.
Hallam players seemed riled by this and really starting piling the pressure onto the back four. The York St. John defence stayed organised and let almost nothing through, especially down the left where Kerry Heslop was having a great game. Unfortunately, the pressure paid off for Hallam and they managed to get a goal back. 2-1 Johns.
This saw a nervy part of the game as Hallam continued to apply the pressure, but the back four and Fran and Kazia in the middle continued to win the ball back to start the counter attack. After winning the ball back, Aimee and Kazia played it around nicely in the middle, and Kazia played it out wide to Gabby Green, who had brought lots of energy to the game since coming on. Gabby played a nice pass to Chloe, who took a touch and chipped it over the keeper. 3-1 Johns.
With the two goal cushion restored, York St. John could be a bit calmer. Although this proved difficult due to the intensity Hallam were playing. The frustration of the Hallam players really started coming out as they were committing lots of fouls, and arguing with the ref, our players and their own players. York St. John didn’t rise to it and they stayed strong to limit any chances. A brilliant win for York St. John in a very strenuous and challenging game.
