The cue “shoulders back and down” is often taught with good intentions and it may create a certain outward look. However, healthy movement is often more dynamic than aesthetic.
When we lift our arms overhead, our shoulders are designed to move, not be held back and down.
The scapula glides around the ribcage, rotates upward, gently elevates, and coordinates with the arm in a beautiful dance called scapulohumeral rhythm.
If we try to hold the shoulder blades down while reaching overhead, we can end up working against the body’s natural mechanics. Which can lead to more tension. Something most of us are looking to release from the shoulders!
One of my favourite images when lifting the arms over head is that my arms are wings. Sweeping effortlessly as my scapula supports the weight of them sliding around the ribcage. This gives me the sense of dynamic, responsive and supported movement. The scapula and arm effortlessly transmitting force, adapting tone and creating efficient movement pathways. Like a bird about to take flight.
