Concerned about the climate emergency?
Cycling as a means of transport has a direct impact on reducing climate change and improving wellness.
Every time you, your family or friends ride a bike you are helping lower carbon emissions, improve your health and wellness. Please support this activity, or better still, become a participant. Joining a supportive cycling club will help you reduce emissions and improve your wellbeing and health.
Cycling benefits:
Cycling reduces carbon emissions. Cycling has a carbon footprint of about 21g of CO2 per kilometre. That’s less than walking or getting the bus and less than a tenth the emissions of driving.
Electric bikes have an even lower carbon footprint than conventional bikes because fewer calories are burned per kilometre, despite the emissions from battery manufacturing and electricity use
Cycling improves health and fitness. 30 minutes of cycling a day (on the road or in the gym) can help you to lose weight, improve your health and reduce stress. An hour on a bike can burn more than 650 calories.
Cycling improves wellness. Cycling is a proven way to reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart attack and depression.
Cycling removes cars from the road and lowers emissions. If cycling’s popularity in Britain increased six-fold (equivalent to returning to 1940s levels) and all this pedalling replaced driving, this could make a net reduction of 7.7-million tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to 6% of the UK’s transport emissions.
Joining a cycling club or group is an excellent way to make an impact on climate change and grow your social circle. If you're new to riding - you'll probably find all the maintenance and training advice you may have been looking for there, too.
