We had a new boat for most of us out on the water today. John has been keeping his Tideway 12 at the Club for a while so it was good to see him in it out sailing ⛵️
There was a good turnout for the afternoon races in the sunshine though the wind made it difficult at times !
Nice to see this year’s cygnets out enjoying the sunshine too !

It was great to see the development of sailing skills that members have made this season and big thanks to all the members helping on the shore and out on the water !

Great turnout in the sunshine today for the 3 race Tankard Trophy. The light and variable easterly breeze made course setting difficult for Sean as Race Officer and provided plenty of calm patches to catch the racers out when they least expected it all around the course !
Well done to Phil, Tony and Richard for winning the individual races and I am not 100% sure of the final result as I think it will go down to a tie break !

Today we said goodbye to longtime member Paul Metcalf to sail off into the sunset. Paul had been a member for many years sailing National 12s, Streakers and in recent years a Topper.

Paul was great company on land and a good competitor on the water, was often on the Race Officer teams for Open Meetings, always helped out on the maintenance days at the Club when he could and assisted with the last major electrical renovations of the clubhouse.

Fair winds and (and as he was also a keen cyclist with Otley Cycle Club) gentle hills Paul !

Funny how a little torrential rain storm a hour before the race dampens people’s enthusiasm !
There was a reduced number of takers for the evening race this Wednesday compared to last week but those who came down were keen and a good race was had !
Great to see another new Solo to the club out on the water too.

The warmest day of the day so far certainly brought the sailors out to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant breeze, pity I picked this evening to volunteer for OOD duty 😂
Getting them all recorded at the end of the race could be fun !!!!

Most Sailing Clubs operate this way !
Big thanks to all the volunteers who keep our Sailing Clubs running day to day !!!

Most people arrive at a sailing club, rig their boat, go sailing, come back in, pack away and head home, and on the surface that is exactly what most sailing clubs look like.

But it only works because, long before that first sail is hoisted, someone has unlocked the gates, checked the conditions, set the course, launched the safety boats, organised the racing, and made sure that when you arrive, everything simply works.

I see both sides of that, week in, week out.

I volunteer as Commodore and Chief Instructor at my club, I teach adults RYA Level 3 and Start Racing on a Thursday evening, on a Friday evening I work with the kids from Stage 4 onwards, I sit on an RYA Committee, and alongside all of that I still do what every member should do and sign up for duties like everyone else.

And all of this sits alongside a full time non-sailing ‘proper’ job and running Dom Barnes Coaching.

Now I know there are clubs where none of this is needed, where things are paid for, staffed, and taken care of, and if you are part of one of those then you are fortunate.

But most clubs are not built like that.

They are built on people.

People who step forward, people who give their time, people who quietly keep the whole thing moving without ever making a fuss about it.

And here is the bit that often gets missed.

Volunteering is not the sacrifice people think it is.

Yes, you are giving your time so that others can enjoy their sailing, but what you get back is far greater than that.

You start to understand the sport properly, not just your own race, but how everything around you works.

You improve faster, because you are more involved, more aware, more connected to what is going on.

You build real friendships, not just passing conversations, but proper relationships with people who are all pulling in the same direction.

And you become part of something that actually matters.

Because most sailing clubs are not businesses, they are communities, and communities do not run on convenience, they run on contribution.

So next time you walk through the gate, wherever your club is, just ask yourself one simple question.

Are you just enjoying what is there, or are you helping to make it happen?

Because the clubs that really thrive are not the ones with the biggest budgets or the best facilities.

They are the ones where people turn up, get involved, and take a bit of ownership.

Another good turnout at the Club today for the second working party and lots got done. The wind prevented some of planned roof repair activities being carried out but we can pick those up another day.

It was also good to see a number of members taking their PB2 with the help of AP and Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre.

It should of been the first trophy race of the season as well but with the strong, gusty winds the potential competitors very sensibly assessed and reviewed the conditions and decided not to race (and without any pressure from the OOD either ! 😊)

Looking forward to the start of Tuesday evening training sessions and Wednesday evening racing in the coming weeks.

Brilliant weather for our first races of the Season, though the wind did keep the competitors on their toes as it varied across the course !
It was great to see a Mirror out sailing with an excellent junior crew.
The race was run as a pursuit race today, all members please don't forget to volunteer for Race Office duties so we can run an efficient race program throughout the year, many thanks !
Sailing on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings will start in a week or (sorry don't have the Sailing Calendar to hand for the actual dates !)
