Janu Sirsasana, head to knee, or more accurately, ego to floor.

Sutra 1.15 from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali talks about Vairagya, non-attachment. Not the dramatic, renounce everything kind. Just the quiet practice of loosening your grip on how things are supposed to go. And the Bhagavad Gita backs it up show up, do the thing, release the outcome.

Forward folds are a masterclass in this. You cannot force your way deeper. The harder you push, the more the body resists. the moment you stop negotiating with it and just...let go, something shifts. Not always dramatically. sometimes just a millimetre but it shifts.

Turns out that works off the mat too. The situation you're white knuckling or the conversation you keep rehearsing. Maybe it's the outcome you've decided has to look a certain way. Surrender isn't giving up. It's just finally stopping the argument with what is.

Loosen the grip...wait....something shifts.

Weekly schedule time, and the sunshine is well and truly here!

Group classes are running as normal this week, come and soak up some good energy before the weekend. And with the summer solstice landing too, there's extra reason to get outside and soak it all up. Longest day, brightest vibes.

A little heads up: I'll be away from Friday, taking a bit of a break and heading to the brilliant Sacred Roots Gathering in Neasham. Back to normal on Tuesday, ready to flow again!

And to everyone celebrating or being celebrated this Father's Day weekend, have an absolutely fab day.

Here's the full schedule this week:

THURSDAY (AM)

Warming up before class, and the body had opinions.
Sat up on a block to help tilt the pelvis and find some length in the spine. Elbows came down into the straddle fold without any forcing. Then a bit of revolved hand to big toe, just exploring what was there.

Ahimsa (non-harming) is probably the most recognised concept in yoga philosophy, but it's easy to forget it applies inward too. The way we talk to ourselves when something feels stiff. The impatience when the floor feels further away than yesterday. And silent comparison to how it used to feel, or how someone else looks doing it. Using the block is Ahimsa in action. it's not softening the practice, it's practising honestly.

Off the mat, it's the same invitation. Notice where you're pushing against yourself unnecessarily. The inner critic, relentless standards, the refusal to accept a bit of support. Kindness to your own body starts on the mat, but it rarely stays there.
Adjust, soften the grip, fold forward.

So recently I've been tying myself in knots literally and philosophically.

Baddha Utthita Parsvakonasana (or Bound Extended Side Angle)

Sutra 3.1 from the Yoga sutras of Patanjali talks about Dharana, binding the mind to one place. Which sounds lovely until you remember your brain is also trying to plan dinner, remember if you paid that bill, and compose a strongly worded letter to whoever invented Mondays.

The bind in this pose is the easy part. keeping the mind from wandering off mid shape? That's the actual practice. And honestly? The same goes for washing up, emails, or any of the thousand things we do on autopilot while mentally somewhere else entirely.
One thing at a time. radical, apparently.
