Introducing….Helen!!
Hi, I'm Helen, I've a very rare degenerative neurological condition which started in 2020; by 2024 I was a full-time wheelchair user. I took me a year to really get used to my "new normal", then I wanted to start making the most of my life, and find my cloud's silver lining.
Part of this process was finding some physical activity which I could take part in, and that presented a challenge. Norfolk Knights have given me that, and so much more. I'm one of the newest members; I started on Valentine's Day, and I've certainly fallen in love with wheelchair rugby! When I joined, I realised I wanted to improve my strength and cardio fitness, so I could be more competitive and make personal progress within the sport.
I've found the Knights to be a really friendly and welcoming bunch of people, with a genuine interest in trying to improve each other's skills, and develop as a team. There's a whole spectrum of (dis)abilities, and like chess, everyone has their own strategic part to play. One of the unexpected benefits for me was spending time with other disabled people. The club also has an amazing core of support from able-bodied folks who ensure the players get as much from being part of the club as possible.
I'd recommend joining the Norfolk Knights, as it provides the best physical and mental rehabilitation that I've found since becoming a wheelchair user.
