Putian, China — August 7, 2024
In the heart of Putian, nestled among centuries-old banyan trees and echoing with the whispers of monks, stands the Southern Shaolin Temple. Renowned for its deep-rooted traditions in martial arts and spirituality, the temple now boasts a surprising and heartwarming tribute—a celebration of Wales, painted vividly on its ancient walls.
A Quirky Blend of Cultures
Visitors to the Southern Shaolin Temple might expect to encounter serene Buddha statues, intricate calligraphy, or murals depicting legendary martial arts battles. Instead, they find something unexpected:images of Wrecsam, Llangollen, and the rugged landscapes and the people of North Wales. This fusion of Welsh and Chinese culture, immortalized in the temple’s story board is a testament to the deep and evolving bond between these two distant lands.
A Vision of Friendship
The idea to adorn the temple walls with the images of Wrecsam came from Abbot Kong Xing, a visionary leader who has always believed in the power of cultural exchange. His initiative reflects a broader vision—one where the ancient traditions of Shaolin are shared as a world heritage cultural treasure. The images of Wrecsam's streets and people along with,Llangollen’s serenity and Snowdonia’s majestic peaks now share space with ancient sutras, symbolizing a bridge between East and West.
Milestones of Cultural Exchange
The walls of the temple depict the milestones of an ongoing cultural exchange between the Southern Shaolin Temple and Wales, spearheaded by Hafan Shaolin Cymru. This journey began in 2017, with the appointment of Pol Wong, a 33rd-generation Shaolin disciple and founder of Hafan Shaolin Cymru, as the UK liaison officer and international instructor for the Southern Shaolin Temple.
March 2018: The Abbot of Southern Shaolin Temple, Reverend Kong Xing, visited Wales, meeting with Welsh Government Ministers, officials, and local dignitaries. This visit included discussions with the Mayor of Wrecsam about potentially twinning Wrecsam and Putian, highlighting the desire to deepen ties between the two regions.
November 2018: A delegation of Welsh Kung Fu students attended a retreat at the Southern Shaolin Temple, immersing themselves in martial arts, qigong, and calligraphy. They also had the honor of participating in the 5th World Buddhist Conference, further cementing the bond between the two cultures.
July 2019: A team of 25 Shaolin monks and musicians traveled to Wales, performing at six major events, including the prestigious Llangollen International Eisteddfod. The monks also conducted workshops in local schools and community centers, sharing the wisdom and physical discipline of Shaolin with the people of Wales.
A Canvas of People-to-People Connections
These milestones reflect more than just formal exchanges; they represent real connections between people, communities, and cultures. The images on the temple walls are not just paintings—they are stories of friendship, understanding, and shared experiences. Each picture tells a tale of Welsh school children learning Shaolin arts, Shaolin monks exploring Welsh traditions, and the growing ties between these two cultures.
Cultural Exchange in Times of Division
In today’s world, where division often overshadows unity, the Southern Shaolin Temple’s tribute to Wales stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural exchange. It demonstrates how mutual respect and understanding can break down barriers and build lasting friendships. The temple’s walls, adorned with memories of Welsh visits and friends serve as a symbol of how different cultures can learn from one another, enriching both in the process.
Shaolin Arts: A Pathway to Wellbeing
Beyond the cultural exchange lies the broader impact of Shaolin arts on personal wellbeing. The practices of Kung Fu, Qigong, and meditation, central to Shaolin philosophy, offer resilience, focus, and inner strength. These arts are not merely physical exercises; they are holistic practices that nurture the mind, body, and spirit—making them more relevant today than ever before.
A Future of Shared Laughter and Wisdom
As the Southern Shaolin Temple continues to honor its Welsh friends, the potential for deeper cultural and commercial ties grows. Imagine Welsh choirs performing alongside Shaolin monks, tea ceremonies blending with martial arts demonstrations, and tourists from both lands exploring this unique sharing of cultures. These visions of shared laughter, wisdom, and prosperity are not just dreams—they are the next steps in this ongoing journey of friendship.
As the sun sets over the temple’s eaves, and the scent of incense fills the air, Abbot Kong Xing smiles, knowing that within these ink-stained walls lies a new story—one of friendship, resilience, and the celebration of the unexpected
