Tuesday night’s home encounter couldn’t have been a better way to end the season.

Sheffield United Junior blades were our opponents, and what a top game it was. Both sides putting their all in to go for the win in the cold blustery conditions.

Having beat the Blades earlier in the season in the league, it was a chance to do the double on them, but we knew they had quality and strength in all areas of the pitch. The game saw Whitwell kicking uphill in the first half as we took some settling into the game, but once we did, it was a top performance from the boys.

It was half way through the first half that Whitwell notched the first goal of the game. Rufus’s strong kick out of his hands saw Callum and Tommy challenging for the first and second ball. Then, as Tommy came away with the ball, he hit a great side foot shot from 20yds to beat the Blades keeper. 1-0, and Whitwell were good for it.

Our second goal came just 5 minutes later. A ricochet that Callum then got his head to, to flick it into Tommy’s path. Tommy made no mistake with a thunderous left foot volley from around 25yds that looped over the Blades keeper and in. What a strike! 2-0 up at the break, and the boys in great spirits.

The second half saw Whitwell edging the opportunities on goal. There were attempts at each end, but Rufus and the Whitwell back line were more than a match for it. At the other end, the Junior Blades centre back was in great form to deny some of our runs to pe*****te their back line.

With both sides cancelling each other out for big chunks of the second half, the game saw no more goals.

Final score 2-0.
Goal scorers: Tommy 2.

Our 2 MoM awards went to Tommy and Henry. When Tommy plays against the Blades, he only scores bangers. When we played away earlier in the season, he scored a top bins strike, and this game was no different. His 2 goals were both long range strikes with the second being an absolute rocket to seal the 3 points. Henry was awesome in midfield. He was great in breaking up play and getting us on the attack in both half’s, but his second half man marking job was spot on, on top of his energetic display. Both Tommy and Henry were also picked out by the referee for standout performances 🏆🏆

Well done boys. Well done Whitwell FC U14’s on a very good season, showing just how we can mix it with some very strong teams in this higher division, finishing 10 points above the drop zone. We’ve certainly learnt a lot this season of what is required to compete at this level, and we’re excited to take that into next season as we push ourselves to challenge for those promotion spots ⚽️💪🏻

What an absolutely cracking game yesterday in our friendly against Thorncliffe Villa Juniors. It was clear to see why they’ve earned promotion from their division as they gave us one of the most competitive games we’ve had all season.

In the glorious sun up at Sandy Lane the boys put in a top team performance in what couldn’t have been a better warmup for our final league game which is against Sheffield United Juniors Blades tomorrow night.

The game was fast paced, full of energy, physicality and top drawer football. There were individual battles all over the pitch with both teams creating chances only to find each other’s keepers and back line in good form. At one point, Rufus’s kicks out of his hands were that strong, he was looking for a goal!

The deadlock was then broken a couple of minutes before halftime. As Thorncliffe tried to clear our corner, Hunter stepped in to intercept and then Riley and Henry combined to find Callum out wide. He beat his man and delivered the cross. The Thorncliffe keeper parried the cross but alert to it was Zak on the edge of the 18yd area to strike it home first time. A deserved lead for Whitwell going into the break, and the boys were definitely ready for the halftime oranges in the baking sunshine.

With around 10 minutes of the second half being played, Whitwell got the 2nd goal. A quick free kick from Hunter out to Riley on the left wing, and as the defender stepped in to tackle, he showed great quick feet to bypass him before cutting the ball back to Callum on the penalty spot and he fired in under the keeper.

Thorncliffe certainly didn’t ease up and looked to go all out attack with 3 strikers. Our boys cottoned on to it and went 1 for 1 to sit in and protect the lead. Thorncliffe did find the net around 10 minutes from the end with a nice finish from the edge of the 18yd area to pull one back, and in the closing stages all 11 Thorncliffe players went up for a couple of corners, but Whitwell stood firm.

Final score 2-1.
Goal scorers: Zak 1, Callum 1.

Our 2 MoM awards went to Preston and Henry. Preston had a top game at right back. He was strong in the tackle, alert throughout to step in and clear the danger, but his quality on the ball to find the pass or switch the play was great in helping to keep possession. Henry was a machine in midfield. Both in defensive duties and attack he was the engine we needed against strong opposition. He won every 50/50 in what was one of his best games of the season. 🏆 🏆

Well done boys. Let’s take that performance into tomorrow night’s last league game of the season ⚽️💪🏻

Glorious weather yesterday for our home friendly against Anston Rangers, in what turned out to be one of our best performances of the season.

Anston came to our rescue after we were unfortunately left without an opponent late on last week, and sitting one division above us in the league, it gave us another chance to see how we fared against higher placed opposition.

A bright and energetic start by both teams, you could see early on that it was going to be a competitive game. Anston edged the first 20 minutes, but Whitwell showed a togetherness that helped them start to build into the game. We held our shape well and the communication between the boys was the best we’d heard all season.

As the half went on Whitwell started to find their shooting boots with efforts from Riley, Henry, Preston and Callum. Add into that a header from Jake that rattled the bar, we could feel a goal coming. That goal did come in the shape of a penalty. Jake and Hunter both vying to take it, we did the only thing that settles all grassroots arguments, Rock-Paper-Scissors! Jake won so he stepped up and side foot finished to make it 1-0 going into the break.

The second half started just as competitive as the first with both teams putting in a good performance. Whitwell kept pushing to find a second goal and around halfway through won a corner after good work from Henry and Theo. Tommy whipped it in and Jake managed to get a touch to send it in.

Whitwell’s confidence high, it was less than 5 minutes before the third. Tommy and Riley linking up on the right before George crossed into the box, and as the keeper saved Callum pounced on the parry to strike home.

With just a few minutes to play Whitwell made it 4. Callum with the cross that was met with a good defensive header away. Preston picked it up on the edge of the D and struck a great shot into the bottom corner.

Final score 4-0.
Goal scorers: Jake 2, Callum 1, Preston 1.

Our 2 MOM awards went to Riley and Theo. Riley showed great energy on the right wing. He worked hard to recover the ball out of possession, but in possession he showed composure and clever passing. He was also unlucky not to score within a minute of the KO. Theo was a threat down our left wing whenever in possession but also showed good interception work to stop the Anston attacks. His strength is starting to come out and his good footwork was on display throughout. 🏆🏆

Well done Whitwell FC U14’s. Another performance to be proud of 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Yesterday’s penultimate league fixture was a game we had to get the points to seal our place in this division for next season.

Hallam Hills showed in our previous fixture against them that they defend and press in packs which made it very difficult for us to play football, and this occasion was no different.

Another wet and windy day made for difficult conditions but this time Whitwell showed their true strength to come away with a high scoring win.

With several strong performances amongst the Whitwell ranks it gave us the edge in taking hold of the game. Right from the kickoff we pressed well with Callum and Tommy looking to win the ball high up the pitch and put the Hallam Hills back line and keeper under pressure.

That combination brought about our first goal. A reaching ball out of defence from Hunter to get Callum stretching his legs into the left channel. He then crossed for Tommy to side foot home from 6yds out.

You could feel and hear the positivity and camaraderie through the team whether it was a goal scored, tackle won, save made or clearance. The boys all worked hard for each other.

Our second goal was started off with Jacob finding Callum, he turned his marker sprinted through and finished in the far bottom corner.

Coming in 2-0 up at the break, the boys were all smiles as they smashed the halftime oranges and Jaffas. A couple of player changes and it was back out to try and pickup where we’d left off.

With a little over a minute played after the restart, Whitwell got their third. Another great intercepting tackle from Jacob out to Theo. Theo then played a lovely weighted ball into Callum’s channel run and he finished into the far corner from just inside the 18yd area.

With the game settling a bit in the heavy rain and wind, Hallam won a penalty around 15 minutes from the end. Up stepped the Hallam player to try and pull one back, but Rufus had other ideas, making a great save to deny the visitors.

With rallying cries to keep the concentration until the end, Whitwell went on to score 2 more. Our fourth of the game saw Callum hit his hat trick. A quick throw-in from Henry to Callum once again that left channel, he then finished from just inside the 18yd area.

Our fifth and final goal was pure unselfishness from Hunter. Preston playing in Hunter. He drove into the opposition area, staying on his feet after a heavy challenge. As he faced the keeper 1 on 1 he played it square to Jack to side foot it home.

Final score 5-0.
Goal scorers: Callum 3, Jack 1, Tommy 1.

Mom awards this week were very difficult picks with many strong performances. So much so that we went with a double, double. 4 players in Callum, Rufus, Jacob & George. Callum was desperate to end his goal drought, and he did it in style with a great hat trick, but he was also a menace to the Hallam Hills back line throughout never giving them chance to settle on the ball. He also chipped in with an assist for our first goal. Rufus not only made a great penalty save to deny the visitors, but his distribution out of his hands and off the deck was on point. Comfortable on the ball when used as an extra outfield player by his defenders, and you could also hear his clear and positive communication to his teammates. Jacob was solid at the back as we lost count of the amount of times he swept up the danger or attacked the ball to intercept and transition the play. He got an assist in the first half and had a hand in our 3rd goal with a well read intercepting tackle. George was back on form this week with strong defending. He was also an attacking threat in the first half down that right wing as well as linking up well with Preston and Riley. His bravery at times is unrivalled.
🏆🏆🏆🏆

A break from the league now as we have 2 home friendlies before our last league game of the season.
