The story of the summer so far…

The intention was not to do as many tournaments this year but somehow we are doing 9 😂🤦🏼‍♂️

The three that we have competed in so far have been really impressive with plenty of recognition and plaudits despite the lads not getting their hands on what means most to them.. 🏆

Newcastle United Foundation:
The boys had a brilliant day over in the north east at Newcastles amazing facilities. Playing all their games on grass pitches that resembled carpets. An unexpected surprise seeing Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento training for the upcoming World Cup. A
Fantastic day where we just missed out on the final in a closely matched game. We did however manage to go out on a high claiming 3rd place for the day.

Cleator Moor Celtic (Under 10):
A challenge for the boys playing a year up. Something we are becoming used to now so no issues for us. They were outstanding all day. Surprising a lot of teams, coaches and parents along the way to finishing 4th in the table and booking our place in the Plate Final where we played brilliantly but just came up short to an unfortunate goal.

Workington Juniors:
Back to our own age group.. the lads were absolutely flying… breezed through the group with some neat football without conceding a goal amid some horrible weather. We felt and looked certain to continue through the semifinals and a potential second match against our good rivals from Penrith but our own Juniors team had other ideas and cut the day short in the semifinal for us. Can’t help but feel that we came up short in this one but that’s tournament football..

Plenty more chances in the calendar and if the lads keep up their excellent form I’m sure their time will come soon enough..

Tournament season turbulence…

The dust has settled, and energy levels are finally starting to return to normal after a long weekend down at the Ranch for the Workington Juniors Tournament.

A huge amount of work goes into weekends like these, with volunteers across the club giving up their time to make everything happen. From organising and setting up to refereeing and helping things run smoothly, much of that effort often goes unnoticed by the majority, but those who know, know.

Amid the setup, refereeing duties, and battling the Cumbrian winds, there was still plenty of time for the football itself to take centre stage.

We arrived not knowing exactly how the day would unfold, but confidence was high after some strong performances in recent weeks. We found ourselves in a tough group alongside local West Cumbrian sides and strong opposition from Carlisle and Penrith.

Being our own tournament brought a mix of excitement and nerves. We wanted to do ourselves justice on home turf.

The weather may have put a slight dampener on proceedings, but the football on display throughout the day was a credit to every player and coach involved.

Our own journey started with a strong performance from all the lads, and we carried that form throughout the group stages. In the table we went toe-to-toe with our rivals from Penrith, with both teams scoring freely while also keeping things tight at the back.

As the final group fixtures approached, the atmosphere was electric. Two very strong teams, both determined to earn local bragging rights and finish the group on a high.

The game itself lived up to expectations. It was an excellent battle in midfield, supported by committed performances all over the pitch. Every player gave their all and performed at a high level.

Chances came at both ends, but neither side could find a winner, and the match finished all square. It was a game played in fantastic spirit and a real advertisement for Under-9 football in Cumbria.

Onto the knockout stages…

Our reward was a tie against our talented Junior Greys team, a side we know all too well and one we were always wary of. Despite the momentum we had built during the group stages, we soon discovered exactly why that caution was justified.

The result was a difficult one to take after the performances that had brought us there, but full credit to the Greys. On the day, they deserved to progress and were the better side when it mattered most.

And with that, our journey at the Ranch came to an end for another year.

We’ll dust ourselves down, learn from the experience, and come back stronger.

Roll on next year.

Myself and the parents of these fantastic lads are absolutely blown away and proud as punch today.

Playing a year up against top-band teams is never easy, but as they always do, the boys took it all in their stride and focused on the game in front of them.

Going into the tournament, my hopes were fairly simple: compete well, frustrate teams, pick up a few draws, and hopefully grab a couple of wins along the way. Deep down, I thought we might just sneak into the Plate Final, but in truth, I would have been delighted with a 5th-place finish in such a strong U10 group.

Not only did the boys meet those expectations, they surpassed them.

Why? Because every single player bought into the message. Full credit to every one of them.

Resilience was the key all day. We believed in ourselves, responded to setbacks, worked tirelessly for one another, and most importantly, never gave up. That attitude paid off in spades.

Tournament Record
• Played: 7
• Won: 2
• Drew: 3
• Lost: 2
• Goals For: 4
• Goals Against: 3

The stats speak for themselves. Defensively, we were outstanding. The next step is becoming more of a threat in front of goal, and once we find that extra edge, we’ll be a seriously strong side.

What made the day even more special was the praise from opposing coaches. That says everything about this group of lads.

⚽ One coach couldn’t believe we were an U9s team and said we were on par with the U10s.
⚽ Another told us we were their toughest game of the tournament.
⚽ A third coach was amazed to learn we were U9s.
⚽ And another simply said, “You’ve got a cracking team.”

The parents from other teams were saying similar things too. That recognition is thoroughly deserved and means a lot to all of us.

A massive well done to every player. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves. Today you showed exactly what can be achieved through hard work, teamwork, resilience, and belief.

Tournament season ramping up…

This weekend we follow up on our trip to Newcastle with another tough test as we head to Cleator Moor Celtic to play in the U10 age group.

A day where the buzz word is certainly going to be Resilience and the message will be everything that surrounds that.

Let’s GO!

What a day Workington Juniors Reds U9s have had at the Newcastle United Foundation tournament. Even though we didn’t come home with any silverware, reflecting on the day I’m genuinely proud of the lads and 99.9% of what we produced.

That aside, the positives massively outweighed the negatives.

On a scorching day, with little shelter from the sun and hardly any time between games in a well organised tournament, the boys were outstanding throughout.

The way we started, we looked full of confidence and quality. The passing, movement and teamwork in those opening games were brilliant. It was also a great experience for the boys seeing Liveramento and Gordon training while we were there too.

As the day went on, maybe a bit of tiredness and a few negative moments shifted the momentum slightly, but the lads still battled their way into the Trophy semi-final. Personally, I thought we controlled most of that game, we just didn’t quite have enough left in the tank to make our dominance count in the final third, and they punished us with one of their few chances. Fine margins. That’s tournament football.

What pleased me most was the reaction afterwards. We spoke about the lessons from the day and, in the final 3rd/4th place playoff, the lads coached themselves and beat one of the teams that had already beaten us earlier in the tournament. A brilliant way to finish. (And me out of the job)

The pitches were awesome (like bowling green)
The facilities were amazing
The weather was class
The competition was strong
The boys were excellent.l
And the parents enjoyed it too

Tournament Stats:
Played: 9
Won: 5
Drew: 1
Lost: 3
Goals For: 11
Goals Against: 4

Fine margins in football. We did what we needed to by reaching the Trophy semi-finals and on another day we find that goal and end up competing in the final.

Loads of lessons learned, loads of positives to take forward.

Well done boys 👏
Rest up, and we go again Thursday before another tough tournament on Saturday.
