Tournament season turbulence…
The dust has settled, and energy levels are finally starting to return to normal after a long weekend down at the Ranch for the Workington Juniors Tournament.
A huge amount of work goes into weekends like these, with volunteers across the club giving up their time to make everything happen. From organising and setting up to refereeing and helping things run smoothly, much of that effort often goes unnoticed by the majority, but those who know, know.
Amid the setup, refereeing duties, and battling the Cumbrian winds, there was still plenty of time for the football itself to take centre stage.
We arrived not knowing exactly how the day would unfold, but confidence was high after some strong performances in recent weeks. We found ourselves in a tough group alongside local West Cumbrian sides and strong opposition from Carlisle and Penrith.
Being our own tournament brought a mix of excitement and nerves. We wanted to do ourselves justice on home turf.
The weather may have put a slight dampener on proceedings, but the football on display throughout the day was a credit to every player and coach involved.
Our own journey started with a strong performance from all the lads, and we carried that form throughout the group stages. In the table we went toe-to-toe with our rivals from Penrith, with both teams scoring freely while also keeping things tight at the back.
As the final group fixtures approached, the atmosphere was electric. Two very strong teams, both determined to earn local bragging rights and finish the group on a high.
The game itself lived up to expectations. It was an excellent battle in midfield, supported by committed performances all over the pitch. Every player gave their all and performed at a high level.
Chances came at both ends, but neither side could find a winner, and the match finished all square. It was a game played in fantastic spirit and a real advertisement for Under-9 football in Cumbria.
Onto the knockout stages…
Our reward was a tie against our talented Junior Greys team, a side we know all too well and one we were always wary of. Despite the momentum we had built during the group stages, we soon discovered exactly why that caution was justified.
The result was a difficult one to take after the performances that had brought us there, but full credit to the Greys. On the day, they deserved to progress and were the better side when it mattered most.
And with that, our journey at the Ranch came to an end for another year.
We’ll dust ourselves down, learn from the experience, and come back stronger.
Roll on next year.
