Round 5 Race Report

Before even loading up for this round I had problems, engine/oil pump problems meant I play musical engines and managed to rebreak my finger just 5 days before heading to Anglesey.

Friday practice was uneventful and went well, times weren’t amazing but were where I expect them to be on a practice day.

Saturday race 1, I struggled from start to finish. I had a really sn**ch clutch causing me to end up last off the start. Over the race I got a few places back but I struggled with rear grip from start to finish. This in normal for Anglesey but this just seamed worse.

Sunday race 2, another terrible start due to the clutch (I now think I now why so this should be fixed for me next outing) I made quite a major set up change for this race and in found me nearly 2 second a per lap! Times were better and I think the could on been even better if I had made the change sooner so I could if got used to if. I finish 8th in class and I was quicker than the 3 in front if me.

Race 3, another had start due to the clutch but I gained a place going in to turn 2 and another coming out if 3. I really felt like this race was going to be fun and a good result then as I tipped in to rocket in I got completely wiped out. It’s a really fast approach into a very slow corner and a rider behind me couldn’t stop and rode through me. It was immediately clear my collar bone was toast.

A trip to Bangor hospital confirmed that it wasn’t just broken but in 5 pieces and needs an operation to fix. The other rider apologised several times and it’s only a mistake so no hard feelings but seeing as I’m still waiting to be bolted back together and it looks like by the time I am it will only be 2 weeks till Caldwell so I won’t be riding there.

Well all this was going on I had messages off loads of people offering help with loading up etc, by the time I got back my gear was tidied up, my bike was back and if I hadn’t of taken my van key with me there were even offer to load my van. I got picked up from hospital and then had more people help to load my van. I even had advice on recovery and supplements to help. Just to name people off the top of my head Harry, Baz, Jordan, Dave, Scott, Julie, Luke, Ethan, Clive, Rob P and dad for all of the above and Abbey for coming all the way to Anglesey to help me get home.

Thank you to my sponsors , Harman Smith Wealth Management and new to the team Naylor’s Trading for their support this season.

Round 4 Race Report

Friday practice went well, me lap times are never great on a practice day but this round they were not to far off from the 2nd session.
Session 3 was slightly ruined as I was having a lot of big moments on the right side of the tyre tearing holes but after that everything was going great.

Saturday spring qualifying was a struggle, I’d left the Pirelli’s on thinking they’d be fine but I was wrong. Lots of wheel spin!
I struggle round and got p10 it class, not ideal but this felt like good damage limitation.
I left the tyres I’m for endurance qualifying as the realistic scenario is me lap time wasn’t being depended on. I used this session as a few laps to work on riding efficiently fast to last long stints I’m the race. This was great till the not board line dangerous rear tyre came round on the entrance to McLeans and I flew through the gravel at speed. I stayed on but decided to take the hint and finish my stint.

Sprint race 1, started bad and only got worse. After the warmup lap I missed my grid slot and had to push my bike back and as I get my leg back over the bike the flag drops and I’m not ready. Once the lights went out I had a big wheelie and dropped several places. I knew I needed to make some spots back asap. The rider in front of me went deep into the esseson lap 1, I squared the corner off and saw my chance to get the first spot back. From here it all went wrong, there were several factors with tyres and conditions that I didn’t compensate for along with being flustered by the start. I got the bike off the edge of the tyre and pinned it, a large slide that then gripped and launched me in the air. As skidding down the track the bike hit me but luckily no body ran me over as I was on the racing line.

A broken finger, sprained wrist & hip, swollen elbow and a few smaller bruises. Not ideal!

Unfortunately the hip sprain is quite bad and there was no way I could ride again this weekend, worst of all this meant the 6 hour endurance in extreme heat was now only raced by Jordan and Baz
All I could do for them is some pathetic looking tyre warmer fitting as I hobbled round.

The endurance was ridden spectacularly, the pair of them put in stint after stint with bikes and riders struggling in the heat to bring home a solid P1 in class and P2 overall. Most teams did this with 4 riders so to complete in with just 2 in those conditions is even more impressive.

Couple of positives to take from the weekend, the bikes damage is minimal, my injury’s are quickly recoverable, the weekend banter was top notch and having a catch up with Luke Watson, it was good to see you back in the paddock!

Thank you to my sponsors Racebuykz, Harman Smith Wealth Management and new to the team Naylor’s Trading for their support this season.

David Garrison Photography, specil thanks r the only photos before I entered the kitty !

Round 3 Report

Friday practice wasn’t my best, I struggled to get in a groove and in reflection I think I made a few suspension changes that weren’t all good then didn’t recognise what I was struggling with till the weekend was over.

Saturday qualifying, went out but bike was stuck on traction control spent the session trying different things but couldn’t ride around it and only managed a 1.28.5 / p12 in class.

Race 1, thought I fixed the problem but hadn’t so turned everything off and hoped for the best. I had what felt like an ok at best start but by turn 3 I’d gained around 8 or 9 places. Over the rest of the race some of those riders got back past. Riding with no anti wheelie after practising with it caught me off guard a few times but I came back in 8th in class after a red flag on lap 6.

Race 2, the rain came in. Just before the race it was only just damp so I threw an old set of wets in then just before the race it got heavier (not ideal). I found the riders around me were slower in the wet and it took me a few laps to clear them, by then the front guys were 2 far ahead. Even with the old hard tyres giving no feed back I had only one close call and that was due to 2 other riders colliding in front of me. I had my best result so far in the class on 4th!

Race 3 was almost dry but not quite. I struggled to ignore the odd damp patch and went backwards and ended up in 7th in class.

Highlight of the weekend was racing with current BSB champion in my class, I never expected to get to a class strong enough so I would be able to say that.

Thank you to my sponsors , Harman Smith Wealth Management and new to the team Naylor’s Trading for their support this season.

Round 2 Report

My Brands Hatch bad luck has bit again!

Friday practice went well, pace was about what I expected for a Friday but I felt really steady on the bike and it came to me with very little effort well on a very old rear tyre.

The the bad luck struck, in session 6 at the end of the start finish straight I had a sudden bad vibration. I grabbed the clutch thinking the chain had gone and got wrapped up then the engine stopped dead! I pulled up between paddock hill and druids to get over taken by a cloud of smoke and a distinctive smell of burning oil. Once the session was stopped I had a quick look to find con rod 4 had come through the crankcase!

After a long miserable drive home I got up of Saturday to assess the damage. The verdict wasn’t good the gearbox, starter assembly, exhaust cam and balance shaft are the only salvageable parts! To top it all off I caught my had on a sharp bit of engine casing resulting in 3 stitches and some numbness in a finger due to damaged nerve (luckily feeling is already coming back).

Now there’s a big push with help from my sponsors to get the engine sorted for round 3 at Croft.

To recap, my 2 previous visits to brands hatch also had problems.
2023 I went out on worn wets as it was damp, this then turned into a monsoon and I came off going into clearways resulting in 2 detached tendons in my knee and a third that is torn.
2024 I got caught up in a bike pile up on a warmup lap caused by a riders bad judgement, I came away with a bike it 2 pieces and 4 stitches.
2025 I blow an engine.
2026 will be a good visit!

For some unknown reason Brands Hatch GP is still my favourite circuit.

Thank you to my sponsors & Smith Wealth Management for their support this season, without support I wouldn’t be able to be in a position to be competitive in this class.

Round 1 Report

After setting up on Thursday and walking around the paddock I realised there were a lot of names I knew from bsb and iomtt. This is my first round in the Premier 1000 class that is on a mixed grid with Pirelli SS 1000 (the fastest class in the uk outside of bsb) plus the fact I’ve only had 2 days on my new bike and both were in less than ideal conditions meant I felt intimidated!

Spend all day Friday working with Colin from 100% Suspention making changes and by my 4th session the bike felt like it was mine and doing what I wanted it to do.

Qualifying so ok, I hoped to beat my pb but I was half a second off it. It wasn’t the end of the world but it put me 12th in class, my worst ever position but I can build on this.

Race 1 started well, I found myself in a 5 bike fight for p10 but due to a problem with my fuel measuring gear I had under fuelled. On the penultimate lap I exited the final corner in p10 and the bike cut out. Over the last lap and a bit I lost 3 positions, finishing p13 in class. Taking the positives, I’d gone faster than I had in the morning and I was in the battle for positions.

Race 2, now with enough fuel to finish the race I had a really good start but we had a red flag early on resulting in a now 6 lap race. This time I had better pace almost keeping with the leading group in my class, beating my pb by nearly a second and being consistent with times. I came back in p7. Considering who is in my class I was quite happy with this especially as I know the bike still isn’t quite refined and I’ll build over the year to be in that leading pack.

Race 3 was better again, I spent a good portion of the race in p5 before dropping to p7. A few reasons for dropping positions and they are all things I can change to help me stay strong till the last lap in future. After the second p7 I felt like I belonged in this class and I’m confident I can climb the positions over the year.

I now know what I want to change to the bike and my self before round 2 at Brands Hatch and hopefully get nearer the battle for the top spot.

Thank you to my sponsors Racebuykz & Smith Wealth Management for their support this season, without support I wouldn’t be able to be in a position to be competitive in this class.

2024 Season Report and 2025 Preview

After my success of 2023 I knew this year wouldn’t be the same. I had expectations on results but I exceeded all of them.
I managed 5 podiums through the year, I wish we had a few more wet races as we only had 3 all year and I podiumed in everyone!

I had been a year of survival with 2 fellow competitors being taken out by really serious injuries and I wish them both all the best in their recovery.

I managed to go faster at all tracks apart from Croft this year and didn’t crash from too much all year. Unfortunately I did crash 3 times over the year, once avoiding someone, once due to someone causing a pile up and once due to a sensor failure on the bike.

I had highs of beating pb’s and standing on the podium and real low at Brands. The week before I had broke a rib in a pit bike crash then got caught up on the warmup lap resulting in me and the bike going in the Armco barrier causing loads of damage and 4 stitches. I still made it on track at Anglesey 2 weeks later!

On to 2025, I’m selling my gen 4 ZX10R as a race package (get in touch if your interested) it will be advertised once I’ve painted it black in the next week or 2.
Next year I will be racing a gen 6 ZX10R in NLR Prem 1000.
I’m hoping to of had my knee rebuilt over the winter to mean I’ll be starting the season still in recovery and building throughout the year.

I managed to get it to Mallory to race in the last round of EMRA to test the new bike. Considering the first time I sat on the bike was qualifying with no practice on a freezing cold day and old left over slick in the back I managed to get in to the 55’s and got a 3rd place trophy by the end of the day.
There are a few refinements I’m going to make of the winter but I’m excited to get started next year!

Anyone interested in my gen 4 then please get in touch, it's a well proven machine the had an engine and gearbox refresh at the start of the year.

Round 8 Report Donington Park

I qualified 5th which was I best I could hope for in dry conditions.

Race 1 was a battle from start to finish with Carl with loads of over taking we were both strong in different parts of the circuit. Unfortunately this meant we lost the group at the front and he put dragged me to the finish by less than a tenth of a second leaving me in 7th.

Race 2 was a very lonely race, I had a couple of people to get past in the first lap but ended up with no one around me and brought I home in 6th.

Race 3, rain had started in the race before us causing a few crashes and delaying our race. As the rain picked up I made the call to do a wheel change that F1 teams would be jealous of. I’d been praying for rain all week as I believed it would help my championship finish on a high. I was in a 3 man race at the front with nearly a 30 second gap to 4th! Me and Andy had a great battle for 2nd and we even traded a bit of paint at one stage.
On the penultimate lap I had 2 massive slides, one touching a while line starting the lap and another sliding out of the old hairpin. Between them and Andy setting a blistering lap time I was left in 3rd but on the podium!

Race 4 was still wet, for some reason I didn’t have the same feeling in the bike so struggled to mix with the front 2 but we still had a gap back to 4th so remembering these were the last laps before I sold the bike I took it steady to bring it home in 3rd again.

Endurance
I entered my first ever endurance this weekend after being messaged by Jordan earlier in the year as Karl couldn’t race due after a serious injury at Brands. I’d like to thank Jordan and Marty for letting me join them as they won the C1 championship!

Round 7 Race Report

Qualifying left me with mixed emotions, I completed a lap with a 1.46.872. With that being within half a second of my pole time from last year I came in fairly happy thinking I was on the front 2 rows, or not. That put me 10th on row 4. I now know it’s going to be a tough weekend.

Race 1, I had a ok start for a change and gained a spot into turn one. I spent the first half the race in 8th holding off Andy Buchanan. Once he got passed me I clung on for a few laps and started to gain on the pack in front towards the end but it was to late. Finished in P9 (P8 in class).

Race 2, setting off from p10 except this time I had a great start. I pulled well off the line and hung on the outside of turn 1. I then spent most of the race chasing Andy again then on the last few laps I gained on Ryan Hockings. Coming out of the final corner I was convinced I had him on the drag to the line but I missed a gear going over dears leap and didn’t make it past. P9 (P8 in class) again.

With one round to go I am 4th in the championship and have a 7 point gap to Steve in front and a 13 point gap to Andy behind me so there’s lots to play for!

R6 Anglesey Race Report

Friday practice was a failure, after the mass rebuild from brands I had missed a damaged wheel speed cable resulting in a crash on my second lap, my dad doing a 3.5 hour round trip for bits and me only completing the final session of the day.

Qualifying went better than expected, with all most no practice I bit the screen and put a time in good enough for 8th! This is way better than I could of hoped for.

Race 1 was so so, I finished in 8th.
I had a few people to clear after the start and well doing so Jordan Heugh tucked the front in turn 2. I took minor avoiding action and as a result I lost out on the lads up front and lost the tow off them.

Race 2, was the start of my next problem.
I finished 9th but struggled all race with getting the rear to bite in and grip. I had a fairly lonely race as I headed a train of riders that weren’t showing me a wheel.

Race 3 was almost identical to race 2, I headed a group of riders than didn’t force a move. The only real difference is I finished p8 as Adam Campion had a mechanical and retired from the race.

Race 4 was slightly better with a p6. Unfortunately on the warmup lap there was a crash resulting in a rider getting ran over and some injury’s being sustained. This caused a long delay and tyres going cold. Luckily for me I had rear grip issues all weekend so on cold tyres my bike felt the same. I gained a few places back because of this.

Overall after having my bike split in half less than 3 weeks earlier and missing nearly all of Friday I achieved damage limitation but if I could of found some more rear grip then I could have had better results on Sunday.

Next up Oulton Park!

Race report after a mixed weekend at R5 Brands GP
Qualified P7 (P8) 1.35.087 with 2 over takes, not great but good enough to give me a fighting chance.
Race 1, bad start but red flagged after 4 laps giving me a second chance. Had a better restart and finished P5 (P6) with a 1.34.318.
Race 2, starting P5 (P6) rode a lot of the race in P4 but Andy did me into clearways for P5 with a 1.33.296.
Race 3, starting P3, tough battle to finish P5 with 1.33.025 (new pb).
Race 4, I got caught up in an incident on the warm up lap when a rider suddenly slowed and caused a pile up. 4 stitches and a bike that is now in 2 halves, not what I was planning!

Positives are I started the weekend and ended the weekend P2 in the championship and a new pb that would just about put me on the pack in British super stock!

Some how after 5 race weekends I’ve only had 2 incidents, both on warmup laps and triggered by someone other than me 😂
