Interesting sh*t golfers never see… Part 285.

To most people, a sprayer nozzle is just a nozzle.

But there are dozens of options, all designed for different situations.

Flat fans. Air induction. Twin jets. Different angles. Different flow rates. Different droplet sizes.

Some are designed to maximise coverage. Some to reduce spray drift. Others are better suited to penetrating a dense turf canopy.

Then you’ve got to consider what you’re applying, the target you’re trying to hit, the weather conditions and the speed you’re travelling.

Get the nozzle selection right and you’re giving yourself the best chance of getting the product where it needs to be.

Get it wrong and even the best product in the world might not perform as intended.

Just another one of those little details golfers probably never think about…

But there’s a surprising amount going on behind the scenes.

Golfers: “You must be happy with how the rain has greened the place up after the drought.”

Me: “Of course… but it didn’t happen overnight.”

Yes, the rain has made a huge difference. But the speed of recovery isn’t just down to a few wet days.

It’s the accumulation of years of work investing in plant health and building turf that is more resilient when conditions get tough.

Aeration to encourage deeper rooting.
Targeted nutrition and wetting agents.
Reducing unnecessary stress on the plant.
Lightweight autonomous mowers with low ground pressure.
Constantly thinking about how we can improve the health and density of the turf.

You don’t build drought resilience when the drought arrives.

You build it every day, year after year, with the decisions you make when conditions are good.

The rain might have turned it green again…

But hopefully the years of investment in plant health helped give it something worth recovering.

That’s the bit people don’t always see. 🌱

Teaching my 8-year-old how to fix a flat tyre on a golf cart probably wasn’t the most important thing he’ll learn this year.

But that wasn’t really the point.

It was an excuse to spend some time together, get our hands dirty and teach him a few basics along the way.

I hope moments like this do more than just teach him how a valve core works or how tyre sealant works.

I hope they make him curious.

Curious enough to ask how things work. Curious enough to have a go himself. And hopefully confident enough to become independent and solve problems rather than always waiting for someone else to do it for him.

He’s only eight, so for now I’m just enjoying the fact he still wants to come to work with Dad and learn something new.

The tyre got fixed too, which was a bonus. 🤘⛳️🤘

The internet has given people some very interesting ideas about what greenkeeping is actually like…

Apparently we just cut grass all day.

Robotic mowers are coming for everyone’s jobs.

Brown grass means neglect.

More water fixes everything.

And if the golf course isn’t perfect, someone clearly isn’t doing their job properly.

The reality? Greenkeeping is a constant battle against weather, budgets, machinery breakdowns, pests, diseases and nature itself.

We can influence conditions.

We can’t control them.

What other lies does the internet want people to believe about greenkeeping?

There’s one thing I definitely don’t miss about traditional mowing…

Ribbing. 😩

If you manage turf, you’ll know the struggle. Mowing in the same direction day after day and eventually those lines start to appear.

I’ve tried everything to combat it; slowing down, reverse cutting, changing mowing patterns in the off-season and regular brushing.

And just when you think you’ve beaten it… it eventually comes back.

The funny thing is, it doesn’t affect playability. It’s purely aesthetic.

But when you’re responsible for a golf course, you notice it. And then you can’t stop noticing it. 😂

Since moving to autonomous mowing, it’s something I genuinely don’t miss.

Different routes, different directions and much less of that repetitive mowing pattern.

Do golfers even notice ribbing, or is this just another thing greenkeepers obsess over? 👀

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. 🌱

Grass is incredibly resilient, even during drought.

But sometimes, when conditions finally improve, it needs a little encouragement to get moving again.

A grass rake is a simple but effective way of breaking up the surface, removing dead material and stimulating fresh growth.

It might look brutal…

But sometimes giving the grass a bit of a kicking is exactly what it needs. 😂

Apparently…

If Husqvarna Automowers are good enough to help produce the DP World Tour British Masters, they’re good enough for us.

Technology doesn’t replace good greenkeeping.

It’s another tool that, when used properly, can help produce an exceptional playing surface.

The proof is in the pudding. ⛳️🤖⛳️

When I took over as the spray technician, one of my biggest priorities was improving both efficiency and accuracy.

Looking back, we were probably wasting more time than we realised. Spraying too slowly, using multiple tank fills and generally making the job harder than it needed to be.

A bit of research and a few relatively simple upgrades later, we’re covering the same area in a fraction of the time.

It’s all about getting the right nozzle, speed and pressure working together. Nozzle selection, forward speed and pressure all have a direct impact on output and application accuracy.

I’m curious how everyone else approaches it…
