Deben Yacht Club

Deben Yacht Club Please visit our website - www.debenyachtclub.co.uk Dinghy racing is organised most weekends, and summer evenings, timed to suit the tide.

DYC is a friendly, relaxed club sailing on one of the most beautiful stretches of tidal estuary in the east of England. There is also a programme of yacht racing through the summer. Of course, you don't need to race...! We are a Community Amateur Sports Club with links to local schools and water sports organisations.

Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and looking forward to another fantastic sailing season in 2026.

Our autumn races 3n4 were abandoned due to thunder and lightening. My onboard camera captured a lightening strike close to home in video and then a series of frame grabs. It was the right choice to abandon and head straight to the slipway.

We had a Southerly 16-29mph breeze for the start of the autumn series at DYC today, and a course that allowed for a couple of fast reaches. This is me riding the stern wave of Baz n Ali's RS400 from 14 to C. The sailing was a lot of fun today 😎, blue sky and breeze.

Sunshine and a steady southerly breeze helped get a good turn out for the DYC Kingfisher cup, a race started down river in a nice wide open area past Methersgate. The clip shows the busy start and the boats tacking close to the west bank to stay away from the flood tide.
Thanks go to the OOD, AOD, safety teams, galley and bar 👍.

Quite a good turn out for DYC Saturday racing with a cold easterly 16 gusting 27mph.
The first clip is the start of the second race with a short beat to mark A and then a broad reach down the river.
The second clip is going around mark 14 with the Phantom nearly capsizing in front of me so I had to go around his mast. I hardly glance at him as I take advantage of this little slip up 😁and speed away on the next leg.
It has been a windy start to the year and I am getting to use my smaller 80% size sail quite often already. It lacks the power of the standard sail on the reaches, but makes up for that by letting me be in control.

Spring has arrived and we had a good turn out for Saturday's spring series racing. We had blue skies and a gusty, shifty SW wind. The video clip below shows the start of the first race with me struggling to get off the line in a hole in the wind. Then making great progress through the fleet on the first beat by staying close to Kyson point, out of the worst of the tide. I went from 'Oh dear, I'm last' to checking the course card and reciting the course to myself as I lead the fleet away. It was a lovely day on the river Deben.

Hoorah, spring has arrived and we're back racing on the river Deben. Our second weekend racing had a blustery westerly wind, making it very tricky. With the wind gusting over 30mph we mostly decided to tack around instead of gybing at the leeward mark in video clip 1. This was my first windy race outing with my smaller 80% sail and I just managed to sail the course. I wouldn't have managed with the full size one.
In the second clip we have 4 boats going in 3 different directions meeting in the middle.
It was a lot of fun on a sunny cool March afternoon.
