The 5 most common health and safety misconceptions I come across when working with companies:

- Thinking Safety Data Sheets are the same as COSHH Assessments.
- Thinking anyone can carry out Fire Risk Assessments.
- Thinking health and safety law applies only to the Director of the company.
- Thinking CDM regulations only apply when the project is notifiable.
- Thinking you don’t need to comply with health and safety law if you employ less than 5 people.

Fire Risk Assessments… do you have one for your workplace?
A common misconception I see when I carry out workplace audits is employers thinking they can do these themselves like a standard risk assessment, this is not the case.
For all business premises it is a legal requirement for a competent person to come out and complete this, this means it needs to be someone who has the training, knowledge and experience of fire risk and safety management. This is vitally important to ensure that all risk factors have been considered in the assessment.
