"Never enough"

That's a translation of something Joseph Pilates apparently used to say. A lot.

It's something I love about Pilates - there's always room to do better, to work deeper, to feel a familiar exercise in a completely new way.

For me, one exercise I never get bored of is the roll up. To start off with, it was all about the abs. Then my shoulder connection came into play (although as you can see, it's not necessarily my strongest!). Then I discovered that how well my glutes fire is closely linked to how I position my feet.

And now I'm working on maintaining the lift and length of my roll up.

Because it's not just a matter of sitting up or stretching forward - but retaining an elongated spine throughout every stage of the movement.

Of pulling back as much as you reach forward. Of lifting up as much as you round over. Of front and back working together in complete balance.

So yes, these roll ups aren't without fault, but today they're more lengthened than they were the other day (which was today's intention). So box ticked, and that's enough for me.

When it comes to exercise, what time of day do you prefer to get your body moving?

Hit the reformer before work?

Or after?

Or like the idea of breaking off at lunchtime for an at-home Zoom mat class?

I'm potentially looking to add a couple of new time slots to the schedule for group training and I want to know which times would fit in with your lives better.

Let me know in the comments below (ideally let me know days and preferred times) so I can put on the sessions that make it easy to keep your body moving.

1,000 miles.

That's how far Engineered Well Pilates regular David Walsh will be cycling over the next nine days in aid of The Prince's Trust.

Yes, you read that right. In just nine days, David will be cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats, camping along the way.

Impressive stuff.

Equally impressive is David's Β£5,000 fundraising target. David is raising money for The Prince's Trust, a charity that works hard to create brighter futures for young people aged 11 to 30, empowering them to get in to jobs, education and training.

So please spare any change you have to support your fellow Pilates team member David with this incredible physical challenge and help him hit his fundraising target.

STOMACH MASSAGE

Aka the exercise that never fails to show me progressions in my own personal Pilates journey.

When I first started, I felt it painfully in my hip flexors.

Then I went through a phase of not really seeing its point.

Now, it's the magic key to stretching out my lower back, challenging my heel to seat connection and overcoming an ongoing hip impingement.

The first picture is me working on getting as much "lift" out of my lower back as I possibly can - and man am I feeling a stretch through my back and hips here. Just look at that face 😍

The second picture is the "dumped" position my body prefers to live in. 😬

The final clip - proof that even Pilates instructors play the sticky mat tango of working out how far towards the shoulder blocks you can put the pad before your teacher picks up on it and gets you to bring it forward πŸ˜…

We're all human. πŸ˜‰

AB SERIES OF πŸ–
(aka 😱πŸ₯΅)

This is a strong sequence designed to challenge the entire Powerhouse. So yes, you will feel this deep in the belly but if you rely on your abs alone, this is going to be one long, hard section of your Pilates matwork.

Remember, your Powerhouse is made up of more than just your 'core'. The inner thighs are in there, your pits to hip connection and your seat. Plug all these pieces together and movement becomes easy (ish πŸ˜‰).

We all have days when we feel less with it than others and on those days, it's important to be kind to our bodies. So here are the five exercises with some modifications that are also great for beginners or those who hate table top.

The final video shows the movements turned on their head. They're the same exercise but with a different set up in space. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box.

1. Single leg stretch
2. Double leg stretch
3. Scissors
4. Double leg lower lift
5. Kriss kross

It's never too late to start Pilates.

Meet Buddy, the newest member of the Engineered Well Pilates team.

He's helping me to see what's really going on beneath the skin of my clients.

I'm helping him to develop the core strength he needs to hold his legs up without the support of the reformer footbar.

It's a work in progress.

Most importantly, though, is that it is a work in progress. Because Buddy had the confidence to get started.
