Match Report: Viking United vs Mental Health FC
Before kickoff, both teams and spectators joined in a minute of silence to honor the memory of Riley Townshend, setting a respectful and reflective tone ahead of the match.
As the game got underway, Viking United quickly asserted dominance, controlling possession and creating the better opportunities. Despite several missed chances early on, it was Viking United's center-back Ally who broke the deadlock. After some wonderful footwork and an inch-perfect pass from Mitch, Ally tapped in the opener to give Viking the lead.
Moments later, Jack Benton extended Viking United's advantage, scoring two quick goals in a similar fashion. His clever finishes displayed his composure in front of goal, as he clinically punished Mental Health FC’s defense. Viking continued to press, and it wasn’t long before Sean B found himself one-on-one with the keeper, calmly chipping the ball over to make it 4-0.
Just before the break, Mental Health FC managed to claw one back. Their only real opportunity of the half was converted, making it 4-1 as the teams headed into halftime.
The second half saw a flurry of substitutions by Viking United, aimed at maintaining their momentum. Early in the second hald Mitch Swatman rose highest to head home a well-placed cross, increasing the lead to 5-1. Shortly after, substitute Wayne added his name to the scoresheet with a composed finish into the bottom corner, giving Viking a comfortable 6-1 cushion.
Mental Health FC found a brief glimmer of hope with a fantastic free-kick that flew past Viking keeper Kobe, despite him getting a hand to it. However, Viking United were not done yet. Just before the final whistle, Frankie Brooks latched onto a lofted pass, controlled it expertly, and calmly slotted home to complete the scoring. Viking United ran out 7-2 winners.
Frankie Brooks was named Man of the Match for his dominant performance in midfield. He broke up play, distributed the ball effectively, and orchestrated Viking United's attacking rhythm throughout the game, solidifying his role as the key cog in their machine.
