In the latest round of "shoddy home office set ups", I present this morning's effort to record a podcast with the brilliant Kristine Monaghan | Founder of The Class Business Platform about making it as a finalist at the Class Business Awards for Team Led Business of the Year

In my defence, my microphone hadn't charged and then the backup headphones didn't connect, so I just needed to find a way to have my phone on landscape. It was great to chat to Krissy about building a team for my business Cari - BilinguaSing Wokingham & Bracknell

As we come to the end of the summer, I bet you've been to lots of events. Perhaps to promote your business, perhaps as a customer.

Did it make you think you might like to run your own event to promote your business?

Local events are a brilliant (and under-used, IMO) way to promote your business, particularly if you run a children's activity business

So do you think you could run an event yourself?

Or do you think it's not for you?

Because I need to tell you something ...

You absolutely could run your own event, you just need to have a few things in place (and maybe some help?)

Running an event to promote local businesses makes sense - it can boost your own business, support your local community and show your families what else they could be doing. Plus you could bring in more income yourself

I've put together a workbook to show you how running a local event is more achievable than you think. Comment yes below to receive a link to my workbook to find out more

So I think I've done quite well so far this holidays as this is the first time I've ended up at soft play.

Although it's a bit bittersweet as I had to ask my oldest if he wanted to do soft play and didn't think it was for babies. Apparently he still likes going, which is good because his little cousin that I'm looking after this week was desperate to go

So I'm making the most of the WiFi and sorting bits out for next week when the new term kicks off

Where have you had to work this holidays?

I liked this trend and I thought I would give it a go ...

1) I hand out stickers in all of my sessions and everyone from the babies to the 11 year olds (and even some of the grown ups!) love them. I find them absolutely EVERYWHERE around my house - they end up stuck in the strangest places

2) I've always loved bubbles (I even tried to have them at my wedding) and singing Bye Bye Bubbles is the only way I end my sessions for little ones. I've even been known to get them out for the older ones and they love them too. I almost got flattened when I did them for a Brownie pack language badge session a few years back

3) Even though I have more than enough props for the sessions I do, every so often I spot something, usually being sold second hand, and decide it's a bargain and I have to get it. My last purchase I still haven't used yet 😳

4) I do love a themed class - whether it's something seasonal like Halloween (I ❤️ my Day of the Dead leggings) or if I'm asked to do something for a certain topic, I'm so excited. I've done transport themed, holidays - I was particularly proud of an Olympics session I did for one of my school clubs

5) as an absolute people pleaser, I always happily take requests for songs or props when people ask. I know which ones are my favourites, but it's nice to hear what others enjoy. Although I do draw the line at singing Hot Cross Buns in October ...

6) I used to be a bit embarrassed when people asked me what I did for a living. Now I quite happily tell people that my day job is having fun and hanging out with kids.

Do you identify with any of these?

We had stalls, taster sessions and an action packed morning at the Michelle Webb today - as well as organising the day, I covered stands, took photos, minded sleeping babies, fielded escaping toddlers and chatted a lot

I have no words right now, mainly because I'm shattered but the best thing about today? Everyone I spoke to about the event said what a brilliant idea it was - families, exhibitors, randoms that walked past.

It started out with a random idea and a chat in a cafe and we ended up with over 100 people in a room. Chatting, connecting and finding out about brilliant local activities for little ones. Businesses got chatting and made connections to work together in future.

We all got so much out of this event and we are already planning to do it again. I believe deeply in the power of being face to face and the benefits of hosting these events to support my local community where I live and also support my fellow children's activity providers

Would you want something like this where you live?

So it's the night before the big day and our first event for the Michelle Webb and it's been quite the adventure

We were delighted with the reaction when we reached out to people we knew (and to the people we didn't)

From that initial chat over coffee, there's been panic, fear and excitement. From Zoom chats in our PJs, to getting brave about sliding into people's DMs to see if they would be part of our event, to all the things we've learned along the way.

I'm not sure I'll sleep much tonight but I am very much looking forward to our first of many (I hope) local showcases to promote the amazing local businesses and the wonderful people who run them ...

Now, I normally don't do parenting advice or hacks, but my kids asked if they could play a game of pool before going home. As they've asked for no help at all, they are doing all of the shots on their own and this is taking AGES* 🤣🤣

If I'd known about this as a possibility, I might have bought along my laptop

How are other parents surviving the holidays?

*Last time they played, their little cousin was "helping", mostly by chalking the cue after every shot, which made it take even longer

So I've been a bit quiet recently because I took my kids away to stay with my parents last week.

I always think I'll get a chance to catch up on work but it's never as much as I think. We did have a brilliant day out in London and we enjoyed a boat trip to explore Greenwich

I also managed to start another project - my daughter and I are currently learning to crochet. I think I've mastered enough of the basics so I've secretly started a kit I was given before I went on maternity leave with her. She's desperate for me to make it (it's a cuddly toy) so my plan is to finish it in secret and give it to her for Christmas. This is my way of keeping me accountable, so watch this space ...

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays (those of you who are taking some time off)

I always struggle with the lack of structure when my kids are off school and motivation is hard for me. Sleep and bedtimes are a bit complicated in my house, so working in the evenings and power hours in the morning don't really work for me.

So I took the opportunity while my kids were in the garden playing to start my next project - can you guess what I'm up to?
