Yesterday I completely devoured this book in one afternoon. It may be one of the best books I’ve ever read. stories resonate so much with me and I don’t think I’ve ever had so many “ah ha” moments. As soon as I finished it I felt like I could read it again. I’ve heard a lot of her on podcasts and have been putting off actually reading the book… if you’re in the same position I really recommend reading it. So many amazing ways to reframe how we behave, how we aspire to certain values and what we model for our children. It’s a bloody good read

6 months of sobriety this weekend.

I’m half way through my 12 month no drinking challenge. I’ve learnt a lot. People ask me the same questions about the challenge so here’s my answers (which could be different in 6months or 1 week 🤣)

Is it hard not to drink? No genuinely not. I have quite strong resolve so I always knew I would do it. It is hard however to constantly sit in your feelings. Alcohol gives you moments of escape from reality. That’s part of what makes it fun. Without this temporary escape things can get a little monotonous, dare I say boring.

Will you ever drink again?
At the moment I think yes I will. Probably differently to before. I’m not sure what this looks like yet. I’m pleased I did 12months and not 6 as I still feel like I’m figuring this one out.

Do you miss it? Yes and no. I miss drinking on holiday, sitting in the sun with a rose. I don’t miss drinking at home at all. Dinners with friends, nights out I enjoy as much if not more sober. Not drinking allows you to be more present.

Has your body changed? No not really. I spent 5 months powering down sugar and I have never really had a sweet tooth. No doubt if I had eaten all this sugar whilst having alcohol too I would be carrying more timber. I haven’t lost or put on weight.

Why are you doing it? 6months ago I wasn’t very happy. I didn’t drink much- prob 2-6 drinks across a weekend with the odd “big night” every 6-8weeks. I always felt a bit bleugh - a bit grumpy and a bit of discontent. There are lots of things we don’t understand about mental health and why we have bouts of depression but one thing that is certain is that alcohol leaves the door open for depression and unhappiness to walk back into our lives. Seeing how I would feel after shutting that door for a really long period was and still is a prime motivator. The answer is I feel good. Not “cartwheels in the garden, sing it from the rooftops” fandabydosie, but good, happy and calm. The highs and lows of emotion are gone and I feel content, grateful and happy.

So many other thoughts I’ll save it for my 9month check in 🤩

Today marks 100 days of sobriety. The longest I’ve ever gone without being pregnant.

How do I feel?

Genuinely great. I love being sober… fully experiencing every feeling without the dulling down of alcohol is thrilling. It can also be boring… boredom, happiness, laughter, love, sadness, creativity… these are all felt more deeply when we’re sober.

Will I stay sober forever?
I get asked this A LOT and the truth is I don’t really know. I said I was doing a year and I will. Why will happen at the end I’m not sure. I’m also not going to worry about it yet… I’ll know what’s right when the time comes.
I can’t answer the forever question now… but the lure / invite to drink is not very tempting right now. Sure there are times where I think a glass of champagne would be epic but I think given the choice I’d still pick the fizzy water.

Other things I’ve noticed!

☑️ my sleep is epic … 100 nights of quality sleep 😴
☑️ my drive and ambition is so high. I have more clarity over what I am doing with my career than I’ve had since I had children. I really believe the way sobriety makes you face your feelings with no escape at the weekend helps with this!
☑️ community sobriety really helps… I follow a lot of sober people on Instagram and feeling like you’re part of a bigger community is awesome. Sober really is the new black… check some of these out if your interested
☑️ kids…. Everything about them… I love putting them to bed- especially at the weekend, I lie with them and cuddle till they fall asleep without being irritated that I could be doing something else (like watching a movie drinking wine)… those moments are absolute heaven.
☑️ I’ve genuinely stopped “missing” alcohol, I don’t really feel like I’m not drinking any more, I notice other peoples drinking less and it doesn’t occupy my thoughts

So 265 days till the year is up… I’m really looking forward to every one of them 😊😊

Box 313: were so lucky to have had 25 years of racing in our box at Ascot but all good things must come to an end. The laughter, champagne, food, dresses, hazy memories and of course the hats 👒 🎩…. Thank you and PT…. Your generosity is so unique. Here’s the last ever photo in the box… and a few of my favs over the years

Running:
I’ve always been a runner at heart and it’s my favourite leg of a triathlon, and my favourite part of training. My mum came to see me run a race on Sunday and asked me on the way “what do you think about when you’re running?”.
I’d never really thought about that before… I guess it’s that one time when the ticker tape of self doubt or criticism stops and I just feel awesome… here’s a selection of my running thoughts:
“Runnings awesome”
“I bloody love this”
“I’m out here doing this! How cool is that”
And then about 7k into the race
“Sh*t.. that hurts”
“Come on its in your head”
“Keep the pace, keep pushing, you’re strong”

No wonder running is so good for our mental health.

Turns out I should have listened to that “oh god it hurts” a bit more. When I crossed the line I couldn’t put one foot in front of the other… I thought I just needed a good stretch. Turns out I’ve quite nastily damaged a tendon in my heel. No training for 2 weeks and no walking till Wednesday 🤬🤬🤬
I’m trying to focus on the benefits by keeping my foot up and reading!
WHAT A FLIPPING GOOD BOOK. ha written a wonderful adventure book which so simply depicts what it’s like to live with depression. I encourage anyone to read this, it’s heartwarming and inspiring! I couldn’t put I down abs finished it in one day…. Any other book recommendations hit me up below!!

SUMMER READS:
I’ve really enjoyed getting back into reading this summer. It’s something that really fills me with joy. Here are some of my picks for the summer… and my snappy reviews:

Where the crawdads sing:
Beautiful writing, summer read… get lost in a hot America of old

The hand that first held mine : two time lines, 2 stories that intertwine… lovely easy read

I let you go:
Loved this! Set in coastal Wales with a good twist.. easy quick read

People like her: bit silly but really enjoyed it… Novel about the perils of IG influencers

The Giver of stars: pure escapism, written for a movie probably but quick and really enjoyable

The midnight library: not what I expected, it’s a sort of philosophical parable but it’s really beautiful and for me thinking a bit. Super short and quick!

Looking for my next book so hit me up with some recommendations 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
