Saturday:
Having won the toss and invited the opposition to have a bat, the result, on paper at least, looks way worse than it felt on the day. Our bowlers worked tirelessly and the full allotment of 48 overs was taken. Pick of the bowlers was Wickramanayaka (9 overs, 3fer22).
Thoughts of a positive result were quickly shattered, courtesy of an exceptional opening spell of bowling by Phoenix’s J Warren (10 overs, 8 for just 14). Another defeat on the road but so many positives taken from the day there is much to be hopeful for.
We go again next week and after 4 games on the road, stretching across the extremities of the far south-east to the far north-west, our nomadic XI finally return home next week, aiming to fully optimise home advantage.
Talking of ‘home’, our fledgling 2ndXI took to the field for another ‘friendly’. A cracking game and more valuable experience for those youth players transitioning to the longer format of senior league cricket. The old heads (not forgetting hamstrings, knees, ankles & shoulders) of Northcote-Smith (30) & Smith (30), with support from ‘juniors’ Diggins (16) and Van Goerverden (10) helped post 142.
Pick of the bowlers was Diggins (6 overs, 1fer15), whose introduction slowed the run-rate and helped wrestle back the advantage in a tight victory.
Sunday:
The Phoenixes were back in hardball action. Winning the toss - yes WINNING the toss, Tracey found herself with the predicament of having to make a decision, opting to bat.
Losing Zara (run-out) in the first over set the tone and the innings never really gathered momentum. Wickets fell regularly and with only half the overs used 52 never felt enough.
Sensible batting from Blackheath, demonstrating how to defend the good ones and put away the ‘not-so’ good ones saw them past the total in the 9th over. Special mention to Carys, one of our ever-improving youth players, who opened the bowling with brilliant figures of 2 overs, 1fer8 (her first senior league wicket).
Every game’s a lesson and every lesson builds a stronger future. They go again in a couple of weeks.
