Before a child learns a perfect throw...

Before they understand groundwork...

Before they start working towards belts...

There are some much simpler things they need to learn.

How to move.

How to balance.

How to fall safely.

How to react.

How to listen.

How to work with someone else.

And perhaps most importantly...

How to enjoy being on the mat.

Because a child who loves coming to class has something incredibly valuable.

They want to learn.

They want to improve.

They want to come back.

That's why our younger classes aren't designed to look like miniature fight camps.

They're designed around the way young children actually learn.

Through movement.

Through games.

Through repetition.

Through encouragement.

Through having fun.

The serious skills are there.

They're just wrapped in something a five-year-old understands.

Play.

Come and experience our approach with your child.

Imagine watching your child's first judo class.

They're laughing.

They're playing games.

They're running around.

You might think:

"They're having a lovely time."

And they are.

But look a little closer.

They're learning how to land safely.

They're learning how to control their movement.

They're learning when to react.

They're learning to pay attention.

They're learning to work with someone else.

They're learning that trying something new can be enjoyable.

That's what makes coaching young children so interesting.

The best learning doesn't always look like learning.

Sometimes it looks like play.

Sometimes it looks like laughter.

Sometimes it looks like two children chasing each other around the mat.

But if the activity has been designed properly, there is a purpose behind it.

Fun isn't the opposite of serious coaching.

For young children, it can be the way serious coaching works.

Every great judoka started somewhere.

Not with perfect technique.

Not with incredible fitness.

Not with years of experience.

They started by learning the basics.

How to move.

How to fall.

How to balance.

How to react.

How to listen.

How to work with a partner.

And how to enjoy being on the mat.

That's why we're careful about what we ask of young children.

We have big ambitions for our judoka.

We want them to develop genuine skill.

We want them to challenge themselves.

We want them to discover what they're capable of.

But we're not in a hurry to skip the foundations.

Because if we get those right, everything that comes later has something solid to build on.

Champions aren't created by rushing the beginning.

They're created by getting the beginning right.

If you'd like to see what that looks like at Fighting Fitness Judo, bring your child along for a FREE trial class.

YOUR CHILD MAY NOT WANT TO QUIT.

They may simply want the uncomfortable feeling to stop.

There is a difference.

Children often say “I don’t like it” when what they really mean is:

❌ “I couldn’t do it immediately.”
❌ “I was corrected.”
❌ “I felt behind.”
❌ “I had to concentrate.”
❌ “It was harder than last week.”

Our job as adults is not to ignore those feelings.

But it is also not to remove every challenge the moment it becomes uncomfortable.

Try asking:

“What felt difficult today?”

“What would help next time?”

“What did you manage that you couldn’t do before?”

Then praise the things they can control: turning up, listening, asking for help and trying again.

Confidence is not always what children need before doing something difficult.

Sometimes confidence is what they earn afterwards.

💬 Has your child ever suddenly wanted to stop an activity they originally loved? What helped them through it?

10/09/2026

September brings new classrooms, new routines and, for some children, a few nerves.

For some, making friends comes naturally.

For others, walking into a busy playground, finding someone to sit with or knowing how to approach a child who looks a little lost can feel like a big challenge.

And sometimes, the bravest thing your child does this term won’t happen on the judo mat.

It might be walking over to someone sitting on their own and saying, “Do you want to play?”

It might be noticing that someone is struggling and asking if they’re okay.

Or simply making sure nobody feels left out.

These are the moments where confidence, courage and kindness really matter.

At Fighting Fitness Judo, we want children to take more than throws and techniques away from their time on the mat.

We want them to develop the confidence to speak up, the courage to try something difficult, the respect to look out for others and the perseverance to keep going when things don’t go their way.

Because being a good judoka isn't just about what you can do.

It’s also about the person you choose to be.

So as our children head back to school this September, let’s challenge them to carry their judo values with them.

Look out for someone.
Include someone.
Encourage someone.
Be the reason someone feels welcome.

Small acts of kindness can make a surprisingly big difference.

Have a brilliant start to the new school year. We can’t wait to see everyone back on the mat.

Not everything you do needs to be productive.

Sometimes it's enough to enjoy yourself.

To laugh with people.

To learn something because it's interesting.

To move because it feels good.

To leave the house without having to accomplish something for somebody else.

Judo happens to give you plenty of benefits along the way.

Better fitness.

Improved coordination.

Greater focus.

More confidence.

More resilience.

But perhaps one of the biggest benefits is simply having something in your life that you genuinely look forward to.

If that sounds like something you'd like more of, come and try Judo.

Sometimes the best learning happens when kids move, try, laugh, and learn from each other.

On the mat, they’re not just learning judo. They’re building confidence, focus, coordination, and the courage to try something new.

One grip. One movement. One lesson at a time.

DON’T MAKE A PERMANENT DECISION ON A DIFFICULT DAY.

“I don’t want to go anymore.”

When a child says those words, it can sound like a final decision.

But sometimes “I want to quit” actually means:

“I’m not good at this yet.”

“I felt embarrassed when I made a mistake.”

“Someone else found it easier than me.”

“I don’t like being a beginner.”

That feeling should never be ignored—but it should be understood before the activity is removed.

Because the moment something becomes difficult may be the moment your child begins developing the resilience, confidence and perseverance you wanted the activity to teach them.

Listen carefully. Ask better questions. Speak to their coach.

And whenever possible, avoid making a permanent decision in the middle of a temporary wobble.

We’ve written a practical guide to help parents handle this moment without dismissing their child’s feelings or placing them under unnecessary pressure:

Learning by watching. Growing by doing.

There’s something special about seeing the next generation of judoka watching, learning, and then having their own turn on the mat.

Every demonstration is more than just a technique.

It teaches focus.
It builds confidence.
It shows children what’s possible when they keep practising.

Today they watch.

Tomorrow, they’ll be the ones demonstrating.
