Sunday’s session capped off the end of the year for us at (the wet weather was never going to stop us balling out). Then we went out for our Christmas social, to watch our teams/fantasy teams fill us with hope and pain. Accompanied with some competitive dice rolling and card playing, and a few well earned beverages 🍻

It’s the beginning of a new exciting time for this team, and I think I speak on behalf of everyone currently a part of it, when I say how grateful we are for each one of us in the team, and the fun we have on Sunday mornings.

And as always we’d love to have you join us in 2026 and come be a part of the family.

Rookie testimonial from our recent newcomer Paul! Here’s what he has had to say on his experience so far since getting involved in flag football with us! (We’re lucky to have him too, he’s being modest, he makes catches).

“It’s been really good and I’m glad I joined. The team is incredibly inclusive and coming from a contact football background I’ve had to learn the new rules which has been really easy to do. People will always take time to explain things or will answer any questions I ever have.
The sport itself is great fun. It’s fast paced so you get lots of time out on the field. The team are always commemorative towards each other when plays go well or are defended better and there’s no sense of stress if you miss a tackle or drop a ball (things I seem to be very good at). I’m definitely still learning the game but I’m having a great time here and the team are definitely making it easier and more fun!”

Woking Whirlwind club announcement 📣

After recently sharing the news of our previous president, Josh Steele, departing the team, we’re now excited to introduce our new leadership group, who will be shaping an exciting new era for the team.

Following last week’s training session, and the debut of our new team jerseys, we came together to hold our annual general meeting. During the meeting, the team voted in our new leaders, and made important structural decisions to put the club in the best possible position for both the present and the future.

We’re very happy to say that our new team president is James Biggs! James has been a member of the team since October 2021, playing mostly on offense at center (as well as some atrocious defense!) and previously managing the team’s social media. When Josh left, he stepped in as interim president, liaising with other teams to organise friendlies and tournaments, and helping manage the team through the transition period. Now, he has formally taken on the role of club president and will continue to oversee the running of the team. James says, “I’m really looking forward to the new era of the team, and I hope that I can help us grow and build on everything we’ve achieved so far.”

Supporting James is a group of committee members with individual roles, who have chosen to share the responsibility of looking after the club: Jay Bradshaw as Treasurer, Jacky So as Kit Manager, and Josh Harfoot as Head of Social Media.

As a club, we also agreed on our team aims: to create opportunities for people to play and train in flag football, and to promote participation in the sport within our local community. We all love the sport and want to see it grow, so that others can enjoy it too.

Thank you, and we hope you’ll join us in these exciting new times!

We would like to say a huge thank you to Josh Steele, our founder and president, since Woking Whirlwind's inception back in 2019.

Josh built Woking Whirlwind from the ground up - starting with just a handful of players, turning up even when there were only 3-4 people, all the way through to when we were getting 15+. From coaching sessions and game days, to spreading awareness of flag football in the area, his dedication and passion shaped the club into what it is today.

As both a player and coach, Josh always led by example - always putting in the effort, helping others improve, and making sure everyone felt part of the team. Many of us would not be the players we are without Josh's help through every part of each position. Good luck contesting a catch with Josh in the area!

One of my favourite memories will always be winning the beach tournament in Cornwall (undefeated, might I add!) - a weekend that really captured the spirit Josh brought to Woking Whirlwind. Get the job done, and then celebrate with the team after!

Josh also created and hosted an annual Chris Seal charity tournament. Together with other teams across the country, we have managed to raise thousands of pounds every year for Movember. But none of it would've happened without Josh's hard work. Again, really highlighting the sort of person Josh was.

Although he moved away from Woking and joined the London Olympians in 2023, Josh’s impact here remains a big part of who we are. So much so, that we have officially retired the number 20!

Thank you for everything, Josh - and best of luck with the Olympians!
