HARD PAN LIES

Most wedges are designed with the sole cambered towards the toe to create some bounce relief. We can capitalise on this by placing the toe down, standing open, and swinging out-to-in to produce a higher shot from a tight lie!
This technique is super versatile. You can use it from firmer links lies, compact mud and even from the rough!

MASTERING BUNKERS

When we don’t take enough sand in the bunker, it’s easy for the ball to fly over the back of the green or hit the lip of deeper bunkers. If this happens to you, it’s likely you’re struggling to control your low point. Here’s how we fixed it:

1️⃣ Kept 70% of our weight on the lead side
2️⃣ Swung smoothly, without rushing
3️⃣ Kept our right arm connected to our chest

VISUALISATION

In today’s YouTube video, dropping at 6pm BST, I work with PGA pro Aiden on a variety of shots around the green, helping take his short game from good to world class.

Here we are looking at using his eyes to effectively judge distance…
THE ROUTINE
1️⃣ Read the lie and select your club
2️⃣ Glance at the pin when over the ball
3️⃣ Make sure your last look is at your landing spot, where you burn the image of that location in your mind!

DOUBLE HIT!

The double hit is a tough one but it’s not as rare as you might think. Whilst it can be quite confusing, the causes of this shot (as well as the fix) are actually quite simple!

IMPROVING OUR TECHNIQUE
To make sure we strike the ball well, we worked on the following:

1️⃣ Keeping our pressure through the lead side
2️⃣ Rotating gently through to the target
3️⃣ Shortening our follow-through

When we combine all of these adjustments, our arms stay connected to our chest, which gives us a much better chance of striking the ball well

AVOIDING FAT SHOTS ⚠️

There is nothing more frustrating than hitting a good drive and approach shot, then only hitting your chip shot a few feet in front of you! The good news? For the Release 1 chip and run shot, almost all errors can be fixed by nailing your setup and correcting just one or two faults in the swing…
To make sure you keep your pressure in the right place throughout the swing, try the drill in the video. It gives you immediate feedback on how much you sway in the backswing (and most people do this more than they think!).

20 handicap 📈

Playing from a bunker can be some of the scariest shots for a higher handicap. However, many of the tour pros would often prefer to be in a bunker than the rough, as they’ll be able to get more height and spin and attack a wider range of pins
If you feel nervous in the bunker, then it might be worth copying some of what we worked on here - essentially, we went back to basics to make that that we nailed out set-up and swing, which gives us the highest chance of success!
To play this shot:
1️⃣ Stood further from the ball and squat down
2️⃣ Swung smoothly towards the target (not across!)
3️⃣ Focused on hitting inside the ball so keep our arms and body connected 🔐

Summer golf is here! ☀️

LEFT BELOW RIGHT ❗️

Something I get asked a lot is about what the benefits of chipping with the left hand low on the grip are (for a right hander). This is a great question and one that really benefits your chip and run shot
When you place the left hand low, it stops you from “over releasing” and chipping the ball up too high. It also keeps the club head lower to the ground after impact, which helps with strike with a lot of higher handicap golfers.
If you’re someone who struggling with the following, I’d give it a go:
1️⃣ Inconsistent launch angle
2️⃣ Hit your landing spot
3️⃣ Hitting the ball to high or too low
4️⃣ Pace control
