Instructor thoughts - Emotions and crying in the dojo
As an adult starting karate for the first time and feeling your first dose of adrenaline during class, can be exciting for some, or for others it can feel very overwhelming.
Many have only felt adrenaline in negative situations within their lives and are suprised to find that various emotions can appear without warning as they begin their martial arts journey. They know they are safe and control and consent are very much part of our training so why do they feel like this?
Everyone processess intensity and adrenaline differently; while some default to frustration or anger, others can find themselves overwhelmed by tears.
When you step into our dojo as an adult student, you don't leave your history at the door. You bring your life experiences, your resilience, and sometimes, quiet echoes of past trauma.
In traditional martial arts training, emotional releases like crying are too often mistaken for weakness. At Kuroten, we hold a different standard. We believe true strength is built in an environment of absolute psychological safety.
If your adrenaline spikes during a high-intensity drill and you find yourself crying; even though you may be thoroughly enjoying the session and you don't understand why it is happening, please know there is no shame, ridicule, or judgment here. It is often a physiological release, a completely normal part of the process for some, as the body learns to navigate stress within a positive, empowering scenario; in comparison to what you may have experienced before.
If you need a quiet moment to step outside and catch your breath, or prefer to wipe your eyes, ignore the tears, and keep training, this is your space. We listen to what you need, honor your pace, and support you every step of the way.
Over time, as confidence builds and the nervous system adapts, those tears often naturally shift into smiles, laughter, and a deep, grounded sense of self-assurance. Growth takes time, and we are simply here to show you the way.
